The Position The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Distance Education. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population and recognizes the relationship of technology and equity.

The Distance Education Coordinator is the campus’s primary liaison connecting our campus across distance education governance entities: the State Chancellor’s Office, the San Mateo County Community College District, and various state and private organizations. The DE Coordinator provides strategy and leadership in sustaining our existing distance education foundation while elevating our campus’s emergent programs and initiatives.

This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Duties and Responsibilities The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The ideal candidate has excellent organizational skills and is a sophisticated communicator who interfaces with colleagues, faculty, staff, and administration at the campus and district to assist with project management, training, documenting, and reporting on initiatives relating to distance education. Facilitate the development of projects in support of distance education courses and programs Provide leadership in promoting effective distance education pedagogies at the College in collaboration with instructional designers Lead campus efforts to align the College’s distance education programs with guidelines related to accreditation Coordinate the College’s distance education courses and programs in accordance with state Title V and Chancellor’s Office regulations, including coordination with the Education Access Center (EAC) Actively participate as a delegate for the College’s membership in the statewide Distance Education Coordinators Organization (DECO) Consult regularly with deans and directors with regard to the delivery of appropriate distance education courses and support services Regularly attend Curriculum Committee meetings and assist with Distance Education addendum consultation and facilitation Regularly attend assigned committee meetings (i.e., Technology Advisory Committee, District Distance Education Advisory Committee) to provide input in the development of online instructional programs and faculty training/professional development Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that current and future distance education activities and technologies meet student and community needs Work collaboratively as a member of the Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning team and support facilitating its goals centered on distance education Contribute suggestions for improving and maintaining websites relating to distance education Prepare and participate in developing reports as necessary in support of the distance education strategic planning Provide information, as needed, to assist the Dean in preparing the operational budget as related to distance education Maintain a relationship with the Student Equity & Support Programs Division as well as the Equity Institute as it relates to equity in distance education Maintain office and support hours in the Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning at times appropriate to the needs of faculty, students, and staff as well as participate in department and division meetings Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree or above in an applicable discipline, either directly offered or indirectly related to instruction at a community college OR the equivalent (see below) Three years of Online/Hybrid instructional experience at the community college or university level Three years of relevant leadership experience working in online education development: including program planning and subsequent reporting Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom Physical Requirements Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications For persons applying for this position based on Equivalence, please answer the supplemental question on the online application by choosing one of the following:

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
