Job Description:


Binghamton University's Special Collections includes significant rare book, archival, manuscript, art and realia collections as well as the University Archives. The department is an integral part of the Libraries' research and teaching resources and programs.

This Special Collections Librarian for Instruction, Reference and Engagement will take a principal role in developing and delivering innovative instruction, outreach and reference services. They will promote meaningful engagement with distinctive materials in Special Collections and support teaching, research, and programming in all areas of the collection, with an emphasis on Austrian theater director Max Reinhardt's Archives and Library, which is primarily in German. They will forge collaborative relationships within the department, Libraries, University and local community as well as with other stakeholders, and will demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion and responsiveness to user needs. This is a tenure-track position with salary starting at $60,000, commensurate with experience.

The position reports to the Director of Special Collections and Library Preservation.

Librarians at Binghamton University are faculty members and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Employ best practices to design, promote, conduct, and assess instruction sessions and produce curricular materials that integrate distinctive and primary source resources into course content in meaningful ways, in partnership with librarians, archivists and teaching faculty Serve as the key instructor and provide support for teaching with the Max Reinhardt and other theater-related distinctive collections Coordinate references services and propose improved and innovative service models for the department Prioritize and respond to reference requests, with particular emphasis on queries concerning the Max Reinhardt collection Coordinate and prioritize the development of special programming, physical and online exhibitions, and social media and web content to highlight collections and promote student scholarship and creative activities, in partnership with relevant Libraries' staff Develop and implement assessment strategies for gauging the success and impact of reference, instruction and outreach initiatives Advance reference, instruction and outreach activities that foster greater opportunities for diversity, equity and inclusion, expanding audiences and subject matter Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias Contribute significantly to the profession to meet the Libraries' standards of scholarship Participate in library, University and national service

Additional Duties:

Support broad access to the collections including identifying potential digitization projects that will promote outreach, engagement, instruction and scholarly engagement in collaboration with the digital projects group Collaborate with processing, cataloging and discovery staff to make collections and systems more accessible and discoverable, by contributing knowledge of end-user expectations and experiences and current trends in the field Supervise and mentor student assistants and interns as assigned

About the Binghamton University Libraries:

The Binghamton University Libraries provides research collections in electronic (over 2 million and growing) and print (1.7 million items) formats with an extensive array of databases and e-packages (over 400), archival and distinctive printed materials in Special Collections as well as services with a variety of student-centered study spaces. With three public locations (Glenn G. Bartle Library, Science Library and the University Downtown Center Library) and an off-site Collections Management Facility, our aim is to provide access to primary research materials and resources befitting an R1 research institution.

The Binghamton University Libraries staff of over 85 experienced faculty librarians, professionals and staff offer many research-forward services and opportunities including information literacy programs, research consultations, an Open Repository and Digital Preservation Services and our Library Research Scholars Program, a research mentorship program for undergraduates. Additionally, we are excited to elevate our impact to the Binghamton community with the much-anticipated completion of the Bartle Library third-floor renovation project that will feature a digital scholarship center, a teaching makerspace lab and collaborative project spaces.

Requirements:

 Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an ALA accredited library or information science program or an ALA approved foreign equivalent Experience working with patrons or visitors in a library, special collections, archive, historical society, or museum Experience in conducting classes, workshops, talks or guided tours Basic knowledge of German or related language and willingness to further language skills Familiarity with archival and bibliographic description and navigating discovery and content management systems Ability to lift moderately heavy boxes and books and move items to and from shelves and tolerate moderate levels of dust generated during normal activities and movement of objects Strong collaboration, communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to diversity and anti-racism in the workplace Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
