Summary

The WPHPA Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision including conducting examinations and writing prescriptions. Within physician-physician assistant relationship, Physician Assistant exercises autonomy in medical decision-making a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. May include responsibility for education, research, and administrative services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:  

1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.

2. First Assist on surgical procedures. First and second assist on total hips and knees.

3. Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treat illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds. Consults with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work.

4. Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care.

5. Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.

6. Counsels patient/family on preventative health care.

7. Documents patient information and care in medical record, in confidential manner, and may maintain departmental statistical database for research purposes.

8. Demonstrates knowledge of medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants. Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis.

9. Demonstrates skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.

10. Demonstrates skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.

11. Demonstrates ability to make responsible decisions within scope of PA practice.

12. Demonstrates ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases.

13. Demonstrates ability to educate patients, families and staff in user-friendly manner.

14. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

Current New York State licensed Physician Assistant Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant Collaborative Practice Agreement One year experience as Physician Assistant in an appropriate clinical setting, preferred Current ACLS Certification required. Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills listed in the delineation of privileges

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment ï‚· Ability for standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting. May be required to help to transfer patient. ï‚· Ability to communicate verbally with patients, relatives, attending physicians and with nurses and other hospital personnel. ï‚· Ability to give clear, decisive instructions to nurses and technicians. ï‚· Ability to maintain legible and thorough documentation of patient care. ï‚· Ability for acute visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory senses. ï‚· Ability to perform computer work for extensive periods of time ï‚· Occasionally move and/or transport of 15 to 20 pounds ï‚· Requires movement about the department frequently throughout the day ï‚· Ability to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time ï‚· May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
