We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (VPM). Position Overview

We are looking for a forward-thinking leader with a passion for excellence, a dedication to collaboration and a commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion and innovation. The Chair of VPM will have the unique opportunity to guide the department in a direction that embraces our multidisciplinary heritage and aligns with our land-grant, professional, scholarly and community-focused missions. Essential aspects of this role include the mentoring of faculty, staff, and trainees to utilize university systems and resources to support their day-to-day work, meet programmatic needs, and foster their career progression and success.

Key Responsibilities and Objectives

The Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine will have opportunities and responsibilities at department, college, university, and external levels:

DEPARTMENT DUTIES

Provide Academic Leadership : Lead and guide the department's faculty in their scholarship and academic pursuits, their contributions to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the Professional DVM Program, and their ongoing efforts in the development and implementation of the new curriculum. Post-Graduate Training: Support the oversight of the graduate and residency programs, including the MPH/VPH (Master of Public Health/Veterinary Public Health) program, in partnership with the College of Public Health, and shared positions and partnerships with University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR), the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), and the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). Fulfill the Department's Mission : Ensure the department excels in teaching, research, clinical practice, and community outreach through the support and guidance of our dedicated faculty, staff, and trainees. Department Budget: Develop and manage the departmental budget. Personnel Planning : Develop and maintain a strategic personnel plan that addresses current academic, research, and teaching needs while also considering potential succession planning. Promote a Culture of Collaboration : Model and foster an environment of collegiality, professional citizenship, and collaboration to encourage team science, team teaching, and shared governance. Uphold our Values: Through intervention and coaching, proactively address circumstances where college values are not met, to ensure a collaborative, collegial, and inclusive environment where our faculty, staff, and trainees can work, serve, and learn. Mentor and Develop : Assess, review, support, and mentor faculty and staff, fostering their professional growth and career advancement. Faculty Reviews: Oversee and be actively engaged in the annual performance review of faculty and the processes and procedures for faculty appointments, promotion, tenure, and reappointment. Strategic Planning : Advance departmental strategic planning to identify, prioritize, and implement initiatives. Manage Effectively : Oversee departmental administrative processes, such as recruitment, policy development, and committee management, to ensure the department's efficiency and effectiveness. Ensure Compliance : Provide guidance and clarification regarding external, university, college, and department policies and procedures to uphold compliance and accountability. Contribute to Teaching and Research : Maintain your own role as a faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, engaging in teaching, research, and outreach as appropriate.

COLLEGE DUTIES

Support the College's Vision : Contribute to and help advance the College's Be The Model® strategic plan, working collaboratively with your colleagues and in alignment with the University’s Shared Values and our College Values. Advancement: Work collaboratively with the college’s Advancement Team (fundraising, alumni affairs, marketing/communications, continuing education, and external relations) to promote the activities and initiatives of the department and foster and advance a culture of philanthropy. Dean's Cabinet Collaboration : Be an effective and collaborative member of the Dean's Cabinet, offering your insights and leadership. Veterinary Health System: Collaborate with the Veterinary Health System to manage the personnel and fiscal health of Large Animal Services in Marysville and the parasitology service in the Veterinary Medical Center.

UNIVERSITY-WIDE DUTIES

Strengthen Partnerships : Maintain and enhance relationships with key university partners, including OSU Extension, the College of Public Health, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, the School of Environment and Natural Resources, University Laboratory Animal Resources, Infectious Diseases Institute, Discovery Themes, Global One Health, and Sustainability Institute, among others.

EXTERNAL DUTIES

Engage with Constituents : Actively engage and communicate with critical college constituents, including livestock/poultry/production animal commodity groups and government agencies. As relevant, support or serve as the coordinator of the college's Animal Agricultural Advancement Board. Facilitate Connections : Serve as a liaison and facilitate connections between faculty and external constituency groups within Ohio and nationally, including agricultural and companion animals, as well as wildlife-related groups.

Education and Experience Requirements

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

:

A DVM (or equivalent) and/or a PhD, MPH, or equivalent degree(s) in population medicine, epidemiology, and/or veterinary preventive medicine. Relevant leadership experience, including formal leadership training.

:

Understanding of the veterinary profession including the importance of the training of veterinary students, graduate students, residents, and interns; the diversity of roles within the profession; and the responsibilities of veterinarians to the wellbeing of humans and animals, the environment, and communities. An understanding of the land-grant mission, including extension, and an appreciation of how these aspects support the health, productivity, and sustainability of animal agriculture, the human-animal bond, and the role and importance of veterinary medicine to community health. Demonstrated achievement in scholarship and/or teaching, with qualifications consistent with the faculty academic rank of professor in VPM or similar achievements in government and/or private sectors. Experience working in various roles/fields related to population medicine, including broad experience spanning multiple disciplines. Proven experience in managing and evaluating personnel at various levels of the organization. A proven track record of mentoring. An accessible and engaging leadership style, committed to listening, learning, fostering shared governance, and a focus on results while maintaining a culture of accountability to shared values, professional behavior, and collegial interactions. A demonstrated history of supporting and sustaining a collaborative and collegial environment in a multidisciplinary workplace with significant national and international partnerships. Evidence of development and maintenance of relationships with external stakeholders. Experience in partnering with advancement, fundraising, development activities.

Department Information

The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (VPM) was established in 1934 as the first of its kind and boasts a rich history. Its mission is dedicated to preventing and controlling globally significant diseases that impact animal populations, humans and ecosystem health. The department brings together expertise in veterinary microbiology, epidemiology, parasitology, public health, production medicine, animal welfare and clinical medicine.

The department is a vibrant community of more than 30 faculty members who work together to cultivate a collegial workplace culture, emphasizing the growth and development of students, faculty, and staff. Collaborative research programs tackle disease prevention across a wide spectrum of animal populations. The research scope extends to agricultural sustainability, productivity, efficiency, and the promotion of health in both human and animal populations.

The Department of Preventive Medicine is committed to training the next generation of experts. Residency and internship training programs are available in various specialized areas, including One Welfare, Livestock Production Medicine, Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, Ecosystem Health, Laboratory Animal Medicine, and Veterinary Public Health. The department actively participates in a Veterinary Extension Outreach teaching program in collaboration with OSU Extension, extending its expertise and knowledge to a broader community.

The department also offers a unique Veterinary Public Health program that includes a specialization leading to a Master of Public Health degree, in partnership with the College of Public Health. Additionally, the Large Animal Ambulatory Services at Marysville provide fourth-year veterinary students with hands-on, valuable exposure to large animal primary care in both clinical and ambulatory settings, in a rural practice environment.

Through a partnership with the School of Environment and Natural Resources, the department’s Ecosystem Health Program addresses complex environmental challenges. Faculty in the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) program support research, instruction, IACUC review, and compliance across the University. In addition, the College of Veterinary Medicine’s One Welfare and Sustainability Center is poised to become a global leader in animal population health, welfare, and sustainability, with a focus on conservation-based systems.
