JOB SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Radiation Oncology is responsible for the coordination and delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and following all established standards of practice, Nursing Code of Ethics and State and Federal guidelines. The RN adheres to all Stamford Hospital’s policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Program. The RN ensures provision of safe and therapeutic care using the values inherent in our hospital culture. The registered nurse demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the patient with complex needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated nurse manager.

DESCRIPTION OF REVELANCE AND IMPACT TO PATIENT CENTERED-CARE:

The RN promotes collaboration with all SH/BCC departments to provide the highest level of care for the patient receiving treatment in Radiation Oncology. The RN collaborates with colleagues to create a relationship with the patient that enhances care and communication and streamlines the care process wherever possible. 

The RN utilizes the appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective and financially responsible. The RN works corroboratively to manage staffing resources to optimize patient flow and seamless care throughout MOH.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients and families. Implements nursing process: Assesses patient and family needs; Implements the plan of care; Evaluates the patient’s response to interventions. Sets priorities when organizing care for patients with varying acuity. Maintain continuity of care through clear and concise (verbal and written) communication. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development of the adult and geriatric patient. 

B. Quality of Care

Documents patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with nursing documentation standards. Creates a comprehensive plan of care based on data from an initial assessment of patient and family, information from other members of the health care team, referrals and previous medical records. Develops a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, utilizing appropriate resources and documents according to the department’s documentation standards. Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care, and documents progress in meeting stated goals. Revise’s plan of care as needed to achieve desired outcomes. Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care and makes appropriate referrals. Participates actively in the unit-based, organizational educational programs, organizational quality management and/or quality improvement programs. Disseminates information to peers. Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors. Administers medication safely (when applicable) according to established policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining emergency medications for CT Simulations.  Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently. Uses equipment safely and efficiently. Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission. Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification.

C. Coordination/Collaboration

Interacts with patients and families in a caring and compassionate manner respecting the need for privacy and confidentiality. Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team and related departments to provide accurate information about the care of the patients. Displays a positive attitude and works to achieve an environment of respect, accountability, teamwork, integrity, and compassion. Does not support or take part in disruptive or negative behavior.  Develops, utilizes and evaluates unit-specific standards of care. Upholds the . code of ethics and acts as a role model to other staff members. Develops approaches to problem solving which meet the individual needs of the patients and families. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care and support to the populations served. Fosters an environment that is sensitive to the needs of diverse populations, including but not limited to culture, ethnicity, gender, and age. Demonstrates flexibility in setting and changing priorities. Accepts additional responsibilities as needed.  Participates in QA/QI projects for the unit, the Department and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.

D. Education

Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth through identification of own learning needs. Share’s knowledge and experience with colleagues. Seeks and accepts guidance for additional learning needs. Engages in critical thinking to arrive at solutions by actively and conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, or evaluating information gathered from, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning and communication.

E. Team building/Coaching and Mentoring/Leadership Development

Personal & professional growth expected to be developed in collaboration with the Nurse Manager annually. Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other team members. Participates actively in group decision making. Participates in determining and implementing goals and objectives for the department.  Participates in determining goals and objectives in the periodic review and evaluation.

E. Research

Utilizes nursing research findings in clinical practice. Contributes to nursing and/or medical research endeavors by supporting investigators.

F. Budget

Utilizes time and materials in an effective and economical manner. Provides suggestions which support the delivery of cost-effective health care.

COMPETENCIES AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

UNIT SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES & REQUIREMENTS: 

Demonstrates expertise in the nursing care of Oncology patients.  Successfully completes the ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Course within 12 months of hire Annual Core Competencies as mandated by Stamford Hospital Relevant annual Hospital and Ambulatory clinical nursing competencies May require the ability to develop new policies and procedures. Require the skills to integrate major areas, communicate information, and provide mentorship/preceptorship

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):

Required 

Valid CT RN State License  BSN Required Certification in Oncology Nursing, OCN preferred. Required within 24 months of hire.  Valid BLS certification  Requires extensive knowledge in Oncology nursing and advanced knowledge of principles and practices within the field of nursing and excellent interpersonal skills to deal with critically and sometimes terminally ill cancer patients. Must be able to demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills.
