POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a dedicated Laboratory Animal Technician to play a pivotal role in our groundbreaking project aimed at developing vaccines against HERV-K envelope to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The successful candidate will be deeply involved in supporting the development and testing of these vaccines, utilizing transgenic mice models. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, from animal husbandry and handling to conducting sophisticated biological procedures such as injections, blood and tissue sample collection, and genotyping. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining experimental animal colonies, managing multiple animal studies, and ensuring the humane treatment of animals under their care. Candidates should have a strong background in biology, with specific certifications in animal work and experience in handling transgenic mice. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to significant advancements in ALS research and vaccine development.

 

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Maintain experimental animal colonies and collect sequential colony census.
  • Conduct small animal husbandry, handling, and specific procedures like injections and blood withdrawals.
  • Interpret genotyping results and maintain detailed records.
  • Perform genotyping PCR and manage transgenic mouse colonies.
  • Support neurological studies through laboratory and technical duties involving animal models.
  • Manage multiple animal studies concurrently.
  • Harvest and collect embryos, tissues, and organs from animals.
  • Prepare animals for surgery and assist with surgical procedures.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of research activities, including data collection and analysis.
  • Organize the shipment of mice to and from the facility and maintain records of animal protocols.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and stock management of reagents and materials.
  • Conduct in vivo drug studies and collect biological samples from animals.
  • Train others in proper animal handling and surgical procedures.

 

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field (Degree may be substituted with experience).
  • Certifications in animal work, specifically experience with transgenic mice and biological samples shipping.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong skills in mice injection, handling, and collection of blood, serum, plasma.
  • Experience in subcutaneous mice injections and blood, serum, and plasma collection.
  • Ability to perform laboratory tasks in support of neurological studies.
  • Familiarity with GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) standards and ethical guidelines for animal research.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple studies and maintain detailed records.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with lab members and veterinarians.
