Residency Training Program Director and Vice Chair for Medical Education

San Francisco, United States UCSF Full time
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (DPBS) is seeking candidates for the combined role of Program Director for our ACGME-accredited general residency training program and Vice Chair for Medical Education.

The Vice Chair for Medical Education leads the medical education mission for the department, providing strategic and operational excellence of the education programs for faculty and trainees. This position serves on the department’s Executive Committee, and is a key advisor and strategist to the chair, working closely with other Vice Chairs, Division Chiefs, and Program Directors to maintain, strengthen, and develop new psychiatry educational programs in keeping with the overarching mission of the Department. The role is responsible for advancing medical education for the department and representing that perspective on the Executive Committee, as well as ensuring those in medical education are kept apprised of key departmental decisions and policies.

The Program Director leads a residency dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders in academic and public psychiatry in a top nationally ranked academic residency program and department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. The adult residency program has 64 residents. The overarching aim of the residency training Program Director is to maintain outstanding program accreditation; develop, implement, and disseminate innovative models of psychiatric education; and launch the careers of medical graduates with outstanding skills in clinical care, education, scholarship and research, public service, advocacy, and leadership. The program includes multiple sites, including UCSF Health, the San Francisco VA Health Care System, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, and community-based sites. The department, including all our training programs, is deeply committed to social justice, anti-racism, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).

Over the past decade, UCSF has made mental health, psychiatry, and the clinical and basic neurosciences a major institutional priority. The UCSF Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neurology, and Neurosurgery share “Best in the West” honors from US News and World Report. Within the last two years, we opened three new state-of-the-art facilities: 1) the Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building, a home to the department that includes outpatient care across the lifespan, psychiatry and psychology training programs, integrated physical and mental health services, and cutting-edge clinical research facilities; 2) a new, expanded adult inpatient unit at the UCSF Mount Zion campus; and 3) the Weill Institute for Neurosciences Building, at which the DPBS has a significant presence, including the Oberndorf Labs, dedicated to fundamental psychiatric research.

The joint Residency Program Director and Vice Chair for Medical Education position provides career advancement opportunity with substantial salary support and dedicated time devoted to administrative responsibilities as well as academic/scholarship areas of interest. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. The selected applicant is expected to balance the educational role with clinical, quality improvement and/or research activities. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the program director will be eligible for its clinical incentive program. The appropriate rank, step, series, and appointment will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Key responsibilities are noted below; however, as a new position in the department, it is expected that the incumbent will help refine and shape the role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected candidate will be expected to provide at least 20% FTE in clinical services and direct supervision of residents in inpatient and/or outpatient settings. This is separate from the administrative responsibilities listed below.

Residency Program Director Role:

  • Help lead the DPBS Grand Rounds series, distinguished visiting lectureships, and other department-wide academic medical activities in partnership with the Chair’s Office, the DPBS Grand Rounds Committee, and the Vice Chair for Psychology Education.
