Protected Species Scientist

The position must conduct scientific studies focused on understanding and predicting entanglement risk and interactions of protected species (whales, sea turtles, dolphin) with pioneering ocean industries such as aquaculture and offshore wind. This position is located within the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science's Marine Spatial Ecology Division, which works to provide scientific products supporting marine spatial planning and ecological and social science studies to support sustainable growth of the Blue Economy. This position will be responsible for executing projects as a full member of a research team or as an independent researcher under general direction and guidance on project objectives, limits, work plans, and conclusions. The position will be responsible for supporting the development of peer reviewed articles building on an existing body of science that utilizes entanglement simulation technology to predict and understand protected species interactions.

Position Duties

  • Development of peer review journal articles describing new species profiles providing biomechanics, movement, and other characteristics used in simulations for protected species including whales, dolphins, and sea turtles
  • Development of peer review journal articles describing computational and mathematical calculations and approaches required to evaluate entanglement risk to protected species using a 3D simulator
  • Execute literature reviews and primary communications with national and international experts
  • Participate in team work including gathering of technical information to support entanglement simulator development to inform development of peer reviewed journal articles
  • Assist with development of communication products
  • Set and meet deadlines for completion of work in timely manner

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or closely-related field.
  • P.E. registration is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Strong background in scientific computing such as finite element solid mechanics and/or computational fluid dynamics.
  • Strong programming skills in C, C++, or C# (preferred). Experience with .NET programming is a plus.
  • Experience with Marine Biology, Coastal Ecology, or Protected Resource Management preferred.
  • Experience in or willingness to learn game-style programming and simulation including content creation and 3D model animation.
  • Willingness to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment to include Fisheries Experts, Marine Biologists, Engineers, Governmental experts in fisheries science, regulation, and policy.
