Purpose
The purpose of the Locomotive Engineer is to bring empty cars up for loading and take cars down to the other railroad and switching plant packaging cars. This position also ensures quality control tests are ran routinely to ensure the integrity of the product being produced.

Responsibilities of the Locomotive Engineer
The Locomotive Engineer is responsible for bringing empty cars up for loading and taking cars down after they have been loaded safely. This is done by monitoring speed, and other instruments, observing tracks for obstructions, using various controls and communicating with other employees to ensure loads are delivered in the safest manner possible. This position must work closely with the Brakeman to ensure a safe trip. As a Lab Technician, you will be responsible for monitoring quality within plant production as well as setting up blends for the various products being loaded into trucks, railcars, or into the packaging department.

Essential Functions:

Perform pre and post inspections on the locomotive before and after it runs to ensure all mechanical functions and controls are in top working condition. Safely operate the locomotive up and down the companies Rail to the siding and back with loaded and unloaded cars. Monitor all on-board controls and gauges including air pressure, battery charge, amperage and train speed. Perform basic maintenance when required. Wash all railcars out to ensure no contamination of product while being loaded. Release railcars and coordinate with Shipping Coordinator the disposition of empty cars. Inspect rail line and report to Plant Supervisor any defects that you notice. Ensure wash out area is kept clean and maintain hoses. Responsible for keeping rail clear of debris and potential fire hazards. Keep rail clear of debris and potential fire hazards. When available help Mechanic work on locomotive when it is down for maintenance. Take all plant samples, analyze, record and report results to Plant Operator and also record the results in the database. Perform required analysis on product as required. Prepare all equipment operated for the oncoming shift (fueled and greased). Assist and perform Lab duties as needed Other duties as assigned by supervisor or management member Requirements for the  Load & Ship Utility: Must be detail-oriented. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally. Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions. Possess ability and understanding of general mathematics at a high school level. Must have good judgement and decision making abilities. Must have mechanical aptitude. All employees are expected to work together, as a team, to provide a safe work environment while striving to maximize production and provide the best quality finished product possible. Each employee is expected to help other team members when primary duties have been completed.
