The Supervisor, Art Space at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center supports our patients and caregivers in a medical setting by providing classroom arts instruction and activities in the Art Space for patients and caregivers, leading virtual art opportunities, or working one-on-one with patients on in-patient floors with bedside art. Collaborative art projects that encourage connection among patients and caregivers may also be incorporated into the art offerings.

A principal component of this role is to enhance the patient and caregiver experience, allowing our patients and caregivers an outlet to relieve stress by planning and offering positive, imaginative, multi-sensory art opportunities. The Supervisor, Art Space must be able to work with many different types of art and craft mediums and modalities. The Supervisor, Art Space must be able to assess the interests of the patient or caregiver to help the participant in the selection of a meaningful art project. In turn, the Supervisor, Art Space must also be able to adapt arts activities to accommodate physical and cognitive differences.

The Supervisor, Art Space is responsible for providing a compassionate, interactive environment where our patients and caregivers can express their creativity through art interaction. The Supervisor, Art Space should have strong interpersonal skills, consistently demonstrate exceptional customer service, and be experienced in providing art instruction or presentations to large groups. The Supervisor, Art Space will assist patients and caregivers in conjunction with trained volunteers in the Art Space and should be able to provide instruction to, and support the efforts of, the volunteers during their volunteer shift.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with the Arts in Health field, National Organization for Arts in Health, Arts on Prescription, and various other worldwide initiatives to enhance well-being through the arts. Familiarity with the NOAH Core Curriculum and Code of Ethics for Arts in Medicine/Arts in Health.

The schedule for this position is as follows:

Monday-Thursday 9:30 :30
Fridays: 10
Saturdays:10 , as needed.
Schedule adjustments as needed for evening/weekend events.


Patient and caregiver art instruction and activities

· Provide classroom art instruction and activities, lead virtual art opportunities, or work one-on-one with patients on in-patient floors with bedside art.

· Supervise collaborative art projects and activities, as instructed.

· Guide and assist patients through an art project that meets their needs.

· Assess the individual interests of the patient or caregiver when recommending a meaningful art project.

· Offer positive, imaginative, multi-sensory art opportunities.

· Adapt arts activities to accommodate physical and cognitive differences.

Patient and caregiver safety and recordkeeping

· Adherence to infection control protocol by practicing appropriate hand hygiene and infection prevention strategies.

· Compliance with regulatory agencies like CMS, JCAHO, etc.

· Collect and maintain appropriate participant information and art releases.

· Respect patient and caregiver confidentiality always.

Art Space for patients and caregivers

· Supervise the activities of trained volunteers in the Art Space and provide instruction to and support the efforts of the volunteers during their volunteer shift.

· Maintain art supply inventory.

· Helps with other projects for the program when needed.

· Promote the program to clinical staff across different departments, clinics, and units.

· Display strong interpersonal skills, consistently demonstrate exceptional customer service, and be experienced in providing art instruction or presentations to large groups.

· Understand and clearly communicate the connection between patient and caregiver art acquisition and branded merchandise/e-commerce product development.

Education

Required : Bachelor's degree in Education, Art, Graphic Design or related field.

Experience

Required : Three years of experience teaching or facilitating art in a healthcare setting, to include one year of lead/supervisory experience.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.
