Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced and strategic-minded individual to join our client's team as the Vice President of Accounting. Reporting directly to the CFO (and being next in the line of succession), the VP of Accounting will oversee all aspects of accounting operations, leading a team of 12-15 professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and direct the day-to-day activities of the accounting department, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Lead the preparation of financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements, for presentation to senior management, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the regulatory tax filing process - in particular the filing of the annual 990
  • Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risk.
  • Collaborate closely with other departments, including Finance, Operations, and Legal, to support organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process and monitor financial performance against established benchmarks and targets.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies, ensuring timely and accurate filings and responses to inquiries.
  • Stay informed about changes in accounting regulations and industry best practices, proactively advising senior management on potential implications and opportunities.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop team members, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting roles (primarily working with large non-profits), with a portion of that being in a leadership capacity.  Experience in public accounting will also be considered if client base included larger non-profits.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP for non-profits, non-profit tax compliance and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret financial data and trends to inform decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing competing priorities and deadlines effectively.
