FUNCTION
The Characterization Technician will support Standard Nuclear's materials and fuel development efforts by operating and maintaining advanced characterization equipment and performing laboratory testing. This role involves sample preparation, operation of analytical tools, data collection, and supporting the development of new testing protocols. The technician will work in a hands-on laboratory environment, ensuring adherence to quality, environmental, health, and safety standards. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced scientists and engineers, gaining specialized technical training and contributing directly to production-scale materials programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Operations & Testing
- Operate characterization equipment including metallography, microscopy, X-ray diffraction, density-gradient, acid-leach, and upgrading systems.
- Perform sample preparation and analytical testing on ceramic and coated fuel materials.
- Execute characterization procedures and processes including density gradient column, X-ray diffraction, acid leaching, riffling, and upgrading.
- Collect, maintain, and report test and characterization data.
- Assist with basic data handling, processing, and reporting.
Quality & Compliance
- Follow and support quality assurance requirements in accordance with NQA-1 protocols.
- Maintain compliance with environmental health and safety (EH&S) and radiological protection programs.
- Provide input to the development and drafting of new laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Adhere to all written and verbal operating procedures, ensuring precision and accuracy.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with laboratory staff, engineers, and scientists to ensure smooth operation of the characterization lab.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in testing workflows and lab practices.
- Support training and onboarding of new procedures as capabilities evolve.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of experience in a laboratory or industrial environment.
- Experience with materials characterization, metallography, or analytical testing.
- Familiarity with standard chemical handling procedures and laboratory safety policies.
- Demonstrated aptitude for hands-on facility operations and following detailed technical procedures.
- Strong attention to detail, dexterity, and recordkeeping accuracy.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted, work at elevated heights, and operate in outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain).
- Ability to work in radiological areas and environments with non-hazardous fumes, odors, and noise.
- Previous experience operating in radiological facilities (buffer, controlled, or contamination areas) preferred.
- Experience performing characterization and testing under NQA-1 quality requirements preferred.
