Assistant Director of Literacy SummaryThe Assistant Director of Literacy will play an essential role in advancing New York Edge's literacy initiatives. This role supports the Director of Literacy in curriculum creation, staff training and development, administrative functions, subcontractor support, and event coordination. The Assistant Director will work closely with literacy specialists and program site staff to ensure curriculum excellence, build staff capacity, and deliver high-quality student experiences that align with New York Edge's mission.
Key ResponsibilitiesCurriculum & InstructionCo-design literacy curriculum and experiences in reading, writing, and related areas for all grade levels, specifically tailored for out-of-school-time (OST) programming.
Develop lesson plans that align with New York State ELA Standards, student development guidelines, and the NYC Reads initiative.
Ensure curriculum reflects engaging, student-centered practices and fosters youth voice and creativity.
Support the design and delivery of professional development sessions for literacy specialists and site-based staff.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with program staff to foster collaboration and support.
Conduct classroom/site observations to inform training and coaching strategies.
Develop and maintain training materials, tools, and resources for staff use.
Provide ongoing coaching, modeling, and mentorship to literacy specialists to strengthen instructional quality.
Collect, maintain, and analyze program data to track impact and effectiveness.
Prepare and share reports with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
Support the coordination of the subcontractor process
Assist in the coordination and execution of literacy events, celebrations, and special projects, including our student podcast and book publishing initiatives.
Support the Literacy Department in showcasing student work, building family engagement, and creating opportunities for community connection.
A Bachelor's degree in literacy or education is required
At least five years of experience teaching youth in an educational or community setting
Proven ability to collect and maintain data
Experience leading professional development and/or staff coaching
Demonstrated skill and passion for literacy
Ability to travel and work in person
Strong communication and organizational skills
Must be at least 18 years of age

Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $60,000- 65,000 Annually, commensurate with education and experience.
