Position Overview

The Laboratory Technician, Histology will support the daily operations of the histology laboratory and may assist in a lead capacity to coordinate tasks, divide workload, manage projects, and review documents. This role will demonstrate the skills and competency to work in a high throughput production environment, the ability to assist laboratory personnel in patient sample processing and all other support functions, the initiative to contribute to laboratory projects, and to address laboratory needs and issues.

Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain stringent standards for quality to identify any issues that might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety.
  • Communicate issues to the appropriate management representatives to ensure prompt resolution, as needed.
  • Complete training in general lab duties and attend laboratory meetings and/or continuing education opportunities.
  • Provide guidance and constructive feedback for new lab employees.
  • Provide peer review feedback for evaluations.
  • Assist in the general upkeep of the laboratory; including, but not limited to, maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment, and cleaning glassware, racks, and other laboratory supplies.
  • Manage and organize inventory of slides, tubes, blocks, and sample inventory.
  • Respond to temperature alerts and generate reports using the wireless temperature monitoring system.
  • Ensure on-time calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Document and maintain all records for equipment and instruments.
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of personnel and training documents.
  • Perform quality assurance activities, to include internal audits, and inspection preparation.
  • Assist in batching samples, label printing, and verification of specimen labeling.
  • Assist in research, development, and validation studies, as needed.
  • Support in monitoring the histology queue for various tasks that need to be performed and performing these tasks with supervision.
  • Use laboratory information management system (LIMS) to track requisition and specimen status and ensure prompt turnaround time of specimens.
  • Set up laboratory equipment and perform equipment maintenance independently and according to the laboratory's standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Support the training of laboratory assistants/technicians on current and new procedures.
  • Interact with the customer service team by phone, fax, or e-mail to obtain required information and documentation.
  • Review SOPs and provide input for improvements.
  • Participate in projects under the supervision of leadership, while maintaining quality and efficient workflow of daily duties.
  • Assist with automated procedures according to the laboratory's stand operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Lead the laboratory technician team to coordinate tasks and divide workload, as needed.
  • Ability to learn and follow written procedures.

  • Ability to work seated for approximately 75% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Biological Sciences or Life Sciences field as outlined in the essential duties; or High School Diploma/General Education Degree (GED) and 2+ years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties in lieu of Associates Degree.
  • 1+ years of experience working in a laboratory environment or relevant laboratory experience through coursework.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences or Life Sciences or field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 2+ years of experience in related field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • Experience maintaining inventory or resources in an organized manner.
  • Working knowledge of quality control processes and methodologies.

Salary Range:

$38, $65,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
