Position Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and results-driven founding Vice President of Philanthropy to join our executive leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. As the CEO builds the Road to Hire Executive Leadership Team, this role represents a new and elevated position that aligns with the organization's new direction and growth strategy for the next decade. This role requires a seasoned philanthropic executive with experience leading for impact and with an individual track record of closing major gifts, and exceptional donor stewardship and management. The ideal candidate combines strategic vision with hands-on execution, serving as both a thought leader in philanthropic strategy and a working executive who integrates major gift work with donor relations.

Road to Hire's philanthropic strategy is founded on substantial lead gifts from founding partners and the organization's founder, complemented by strategic public and private investments. Due to strong demand and demonstrated support from our school district, R2H has entered a strategic growth phase and is actively seeking to expand and diversify its funding portfolio while preserving its core founding financial foundation.

The Founding VP of Philanthropy will be responsible for building upon this established foundation to accelerate revenue growth and significantly expand philanthropic reach across local and national markets. This leadership position requires developing innovative fundraising strategies that honor existing donor relationships while identifying and cultivating new revenue streams from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and government sources. Success in this position will be measured by both quantitative revenue growth and qualitative expansion of R2H's philanthropic network and influence.

Target Compensation:
$135,000 annual plus full benefits package

Chief Executive Officer

Location Requirements:
This is a hybrid position that requires residence in the Charlotte region with required in-office presence Tuesday through Thursday. Occasional weekends and evenings may be required to support philanthropic efforts and outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

Major Gifts Officer:
Drive annual revenue goals through personal management of a major gifts portfolio, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of national and local individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Develop and implement comprehensive strategies across all giving levels, including planned giving, and alumni giving initiatives. Own fundraising goals for the organization with particular focus on high net worth individual donors, locally and nationally.

Donor Relations and Stakeholder Management:
Oversee comprehensive stakeholder stewardship programs ensuring exceptional stakeholder and donor experience and retention. Develop personalized engagement strategies for major donors and community stakeholders, managing ongoing communication and recognition programs. Create and implement donor journey mapping to optimize engagement at every touchpoint. Provide strategic advice, support, and preparation for the CEO to serve as the primary representative of the organization. Serve as organizational representative at the CEO's request when needed. Monitor legislative and policy developments affecting the organization at the city and county level, advocating for organizational interests and maintaining productive relationships.

Grant Management and Development:
Research and develop grant outreach and strategy plans working with development associate to pursue key grant opportunities. Oversee grant contract compliance, manage reporting schedules, and ensure audit readiness across all funded programs. Develop and execute donor event strategy at local level.

Communications and Marketing:
Partner with the R2H Marketing and Communications function to direct all donor-facing communications including newsletters, annual reports, impact stories, and digital campaigns. Collaborate closely with teams to ensure consistent messaging across all philanthropic touchpoints. Develop compelling case statements and fundraising materials that effectively communicate organizational impact.

Strategic Leadership and Team Management:
Develop and implement comprehensive philanthropic strategies aligned with organizational goals and growth plans. Lead and mentor development associate, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. Collaborate with the CEO on strategic initiatives and major gift solicitations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy, public and private fundraising, with at least 5 years in senior executive roles
  • Proven track record of personally raising and generating multi-million dollar major gifts portfolio; significant experience engaging with high net worth individuals
  • Demonstrated success closing six and seven-figure gifts
  • Strong background development event strategy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to engage diverse stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • CFRE certification or similar professional credentials preferred
