Job Title: Staff Accountant

Location: Washington, D.C.

Classification: Full-time

Reports to: Senior Director for Finance

Salary Range: $65,000 - $73,000 per year/ based on education and experience

Position Summary

CentroNía is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support the organization's financial operations. This role is responsible for managing revenue and receivables, performing key general accounting functions, and assisting with audit and compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting, proficiency in accounting software, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
Revenue and Receivables
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging; follow up with program managers or external partners on outstanding balances.
  • Bill and record revenue entries in the general ledger, ensuring proper allocation between restricted and unrestricted funding.
  • Maintain accurate billing schedules for multiple funding sources, ensuring timeliness and compliance with contract terms.
  • Reconcile childcare subsidies, OSSE payments, and other thirdparty revenue sources.
General Accounting
  • Prepare journal entries, including accruals, allocations, and adjustments.
  • Prepare and enter payroll entries.
  • Assist with monthend close, including reconciliations of bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Serve as backup for Accounts Payable.
Audit & Compliance
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for annual audits and other financial reviews.
  • Support compliance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, and organizational policies.
  • Maintain organized digital and hardcopy accounting records.
  • Ensure that supporting documentation for revenue and receivables is complete, organized, and auditready.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 13 years of accounting experience; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Abila MIP, QuickBooks, or similar).
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.).
  • Bilingualism in English/ Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
