Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.
- Collaborates with the Managers of Social Studies to increase connections and alignment between elementary and secondary implementation of social Studies curriculum, professional development, assessments, and interventions.
- Applies ELA and social studies curriculum development expertise to setting criteria and the framework for developing rigorous college and career preparation curricula in DCPS elementary schools.
- Utilizes instructional, adult facilitation, and coaching expertise in content-specific pedagogy, planning, and practice to improve the effectiveness of ELA and social studies instruction in DCPS schools, specifically including implementation of the Common Core State Standards for ELA, DC Social Studies Standards, C3 Framework, and district-wide elementary ELA and Social Studies curriculum.
- Assesses needs of elementary ELA and social studies teachers, LEAP leaders, and school leaders, including dual language programs; and assists in the development of professional development opportunities to address those needs and increase the quality of elementary ELA and social studies instruction.
- Supports the delivery of school-based and district-wide elementary ELA and social studies professional development through train-the-trainer, co-teaching, and co-planning models; and coordinates all necessary logistics and materials distribution.
- Supports school-based leadership teams by participating in instructional walkthroughs and observations in elementary ELA and social studies classrooms.
- Creates detailed timelines for each initiative; assesses and tracks progress regularly using various computer programs and tools; and drives project completion holding others accountable for responsibilities and deadlines.
- Helps manage the analysis and presentation of data and progress of data-driven initiatives for senior leadership team and external audiences; communicates progress to key stakeholder groups; and incorporates their input.
- Anticipates, identifies, and resolves complex obstacles to success of overall elementary ELA and social studies programs, as well as specific projects.
- Interviews and surveys other colleagues and management teams to determine opportunities for improvement; researches specific issues; and develops detailed recommendations and implementation plans to resolve issues.
- Builds relationships and liaises with various internal departments to drive collaboration and project success; and interacts with and responds effectively to urgent requests from multiple internal and external DCPS stakeholders.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and four to six years of related work experience. Master's degree in education with a primary focus on ELA or Social Studies preferred. Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus. Work experience teaching in the classroom or operating in an administrative position in the education industry. Deep understanding of the close connection between curriculum, professional learning, and assessments. Expert knowledge of ELA and social studies instruction, Common Core State Standards for ELA, DC Social Studies standards, C3 Framework, research-based instructional practices, adult learning theory, elements of effective professional development, and best practices in facilitation. Dynamic presenter with experience designing and implementing in-person and virtual professional development for adults. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to work under tight deadlines; and ability to multitask and self-manage the deadlines of competing projects. Ability to learn quickly, work in a fast-paced and evolving environment, and handle multiple priorities effectively. Outstanding interpersonal, teamwork, and management skills. Strong acumen engaging in conversations and producing work products that are centered in equity and inclusion best practices. Mobility and flexibility to work between several school sites and central office is a must.
