Job Title: Assistant Baseball Coach- Varsity
(Seasonal position - Spring)
Reports To: Head Baseball Coach/Athletic Director / Principal
Position Summary:
To support the head coach in all aspects of the baseball program, including training, strategy, player development, safety, sportsmanship, and compliance with VHSL and school district rules and policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices, workouts, and conditioning sessions.
- Assist in teaching baseball fundamentals- hitting, fielding, pitching, base running, defense- appropriate to players' positions and levels.
- Support game preparation: help develop game strategy, scout opponents, assist with game-day duties (substitutions, warm-ups, base coaches, etc.)
- Monitor and enforce team rules, discipline, and conduct in line with school, district, and VHSL policies.
- Ensure student-athlete safety: observe proper technique, maintain safe equipment, and adhere to athletic training protocols and first aid or emergency procedures.
- Assist in scheduling, coordinating travel, and supervising athletes during games, off-site tournaments, and other team activities, under direction of Head Coach.
- Help with equipment management: ordering, upkeep, inventory, storage.
- Assist with maintaining accurate player and game records (attendance, eligibility, and statistics).
- Facilitate communication with players, parents, and school administration as directed.
- Attend required coach training, VHSL rules clinics, and certification sessions as necessary.
- Foster a learning environment that promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, character development, and academic achievement.
Qualifications:
- Experience playing or coaching baseball at high school or comparable level preferred.
- Knowledge of baseball fundamentals, rules, and strategies.
- Familiarity with VHSL rules, eligibility requirements, and regulations.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain).
- Teaching certification (preferred, may vary by school/district).
- Compliance with background checks; school district hiring and VHSL certification requirements.
Work Conditions:
- Practices and games usually after school, evenings, weekends, and some school holidays.
- Outdoor work in varied weather conditions.
- Travel required for away games.
- Supplemental (stipend) position rather than full-time faculty role in many cases.
Performance Standards:
- Compliance with VHSL and school district rules and policies, including eligibility, safety, and ethical conduct.
- Contributes positively to team culture, student-athlete development
- Reliability: attending all practices, games, required meetings, and trainings.
- Maintain good communication with Head Coach, athletic department, players, and parents.
- Proper care and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
