COMPENSATION
: $160,000-$180,000 annual salary; Healthcare benefits are available for this role.
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:
The Colorectal Cancer Alliance is a national nonprofit organization committed to ending colorectal cancer within our lifetime. We help patients, families, survivors, and caregivers navigate diagnosis and treatment options, connect them with those who can share experiences and knowledge, and identify resources to meet their needs. We partner with healthcare professionals and social influencers to raise awareness of preventative screening, and we collaborate with researchers to better understand the disease and fund critical research. Our efforts are urgent, effective, and efficient because we believe that tomorrow can't wait.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Vice President of Data, Technology & Analytics leads the Colorectal Cancer Alliance's enterprise-wide digital, data, and cloud strategy and engineering—building and managing the integrated ecosystem that powers prevention, care, and research through BlueHQ (Patient PRM & Engagement Platform), BlueLake (Clinical Trials and Real-World Data & Unified Research Hub), and K-SPY (Adaptive Clinical Trials Medicine Platform).
This role unites engineering, data governance, analytics, and AI innovation under one mission: to transform the Alliance into a data-driven, patient-centric, precision-oncology ecosystem.
The VP serves as the chief architect and operational steward of a HIPAA-compliant, AI-ready environment spanning AWS, Salesforce, REDCap, and MuleSoft, ensuring that data, systems, and people converge to deliver measurable mission impact.
The position is 80% technical hands-on and leadership, 20% strategic collaboration.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Own and execute the enterprise data and technology roadmap for BlueHQ (patient platform), BlueLake (data & AI environment), and K-SPY (clinical trial infrastructure).
- Drive convergence of DataOps, DataGovOps, MLOps, and AIOps to support MissionOps — aligning infrastructure with patient and research outcomes.
- Serve as executive sponsor for engineering, AWS partnership, Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud modernization, and the AI/Analytics strategic plan.
Translate complex data and technology strategies into clear business and mission outcomes for executive leadership, board, and funders.
Architecture, Engineering & Platform Development
Oversee design and operation of cloud-native platforms using AWS HealthLake, Redshift, Glue, Lake Formation, and SageMaker.
- Direct platform engineering teams to ensure scalable, secure, applicable zero-copy architectures across environments (Dev, Stage, Prod).
- Lead EMPI design and integration for identity resolution across BlueHQ, BlueLake, Salesforce, K-SPY, and external partners.
Ensure modern CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, and observability practices (Terraform, EKS, CloudWatch, etc.).
Data Architecture, Management & Modeling
Oversee all enterprise data domains, including patient registries, clinical and non-clinical datasets, and integrations with FHIR-based EHR sources (REDCap, Epic, Cerner, etc.).
- Lead the evolution of Electronic Data Capture (EDC) & Real-World Data (RWD) infrastructure, ensuring seamless clinical trial data ingestion, staging, and analytics (e.g., REDCap, Case Report Forms).
- Direct data modeling and schema harmonization across BlueLake, BlueHQ, and K-SPY using FHIR, OMOP, and internal canonical models.
- Lead the design of ETL/ELT and transformation pipelines leveraging SQL, dbt, Glue, and Lake Formation to ensure accurate, high-quality, and reproducible data flows.
- Govern data lake and warehouse architectures (Redshift, Athena) for zero-copy analytics and AI readiness.
Enable semantic and federated data access for researchers and analysts while enforcing PHI security and governance policies.
Data Governance, Quality & Compliance
Operationalize Data Governance → DataGovOps, embedding policies into code and automation pipelines.
- Oversee metadata management via DataHub (catalog), ensuring lineage, access control, and policy enforcement.
- Establish and maintain compliance frameworks: HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GDPR, HITRUST, and NIST CSF.
Champion ethical AI and data equity principles across all initiatives.
Analytics, AI & Insights
Build and scale a cross-functional analytics capability leveraging dbt, Tableau, SageMaker, and Bedrock.
- Enable RWD and RWE generation for internal programs and external (pharma, diagnostics) partnerships.
- Lead AI/ML initiatives for predictive navigation, patient triage, and research insights, including the emerging BioRepository and AI Stack.
Collaborate with Clinical, Research, and Navigation teams to translate data into outcomes, models, and publications.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Manage an integrated team of Data Engineers, Platform Engineers, Analysts, Scientists, and Governance Leads.
- Foster a DevOps/Agile culture emphasizing trust, collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Mentor technical and non-technical staff to elevate organizational data literacy.
Partner with HR to define technical career paths and training programs.
Partnerships, Funding & External Engagement
Partner with AWS, Microsoft, and industry collaborators to accelerate AI and cloud innovation.
- Support development teams in securing pharma, foundation, and technology investments aligned to BlueLake and BlueHQ sustainability.
- Represent CCA in strategic forums, grants, and joint R&D initiatives with biopharma, diagnostics, and academic partners.
REQUIREMENTS:
Experience
- 12+ years in data engineering, data science, or enterprise technology leadership roles, including 5+ years at vice president or senior-director level.
- Proven record of architecting secure, compliant, cloud-based data ecosystems (AWS required) in clinical, health, life science or similar position.
- Experience with modern data tools (dbt, Rhapsody, Redshift, Glue, MuleSoft, DataHub, SageMaker, REDCap).
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams across data, analytics (AI/ML), software engineering, data engineering, and analytics engineering.
