Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic partner to the President/CEO and the Board of Directors, responsible for providing enterprise-wide leadership in financial strategy, asset and liability management, and organizational risk management. This executive role also oversees the Information Technology function, ensuring that systems, cybersecurity, and digital capabilities align with the credit union's strategic goals and operational needs.
Ensures the credit union's financial strength, regulatory compliance, and technological infrastructure are optimized to support sustainable growth, member value, and operational excellence.
Primary Duties
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Advises the President/CEO and Board on financial strategy, capital planning, and long-term financial sustainability.
- Leads the development of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and strategic financial plans in alignment with organizational goals.
- Provides financial insights and scenario modeling to support sound decision-making and long-range planning.
Financial Performance & Reporting
- Oversees the preparation and presentation of timely and accurate financial reports in accordance with GAAP, NCUA regulations, and applicable laws.
- Monitors and reports on key financial indicators, recommending corrective actions where needed to ensure financial targets are met or exceeded.
Asset Liability Management (ALM) & Investment Oversight
- Manages the credit union's ALM strategy, including interest rate risk, concentration risk, liquidity risk, and capital adequacy.
- Directs the credit union's investment portfolio, balancing safety, liquidity, yield, and regulatory compliance.
Enterprise Risk & Regulatory Compliance
- Oversees financial controls, compliance, and internal audit functions to ensure alignment with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
- Serves as the primary liaison to external auditors, examiners, and regulatory bodies.
Technology Strategy & Oversight
- Provides executive leadership over the Information Technology function, ensuring IT systems and infrastructure support operational efficiency, security, and innovation.
- Collaborates with IT leadership to align technology initiatives with enterprise objectives, overseeing IT budgeting, vendor relationships, and systems planning.
Cybersecurity & Digital Risk Management
- Ensures robust cybersecurity policies and practices are in place and regularly reviewed to protect member and organizational data.
- Supports IT governance frameworks to meet FFIEC, NCUA, and GLBA standards for information security and digital operations.
Digital Transformation & Innovation
- Champions the adoption of innovative technologies and digital solutions that enhance member experience and operational agility.
- Evaluates technology trends and opportunities to modernize systems, automate processes, and enable data-driven decision-making.
Business Intelligence & Analytics
- Ensures the credit union's financial systems, data architecture, and business intelligence tools are optimized to support strategic insights and reporting.
- Leverages financial and operational analytics to measure performance, identify opportunities, and guide executive decision-making.
Strategic Partnership & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Collaborates with other departments to align financial and technology strategies with business development, operations, and member service goals.
- Participates in enterprise-wide initiatives and project governance to ensure fiscal discipline and systems alignment.
Board & Stakeholder Engagement
- Presents complex financial and technology-related matters to the Board of Directors in a clear, strategic, and actionable manner.
- Serves as a key ambassador for the credit union internally and externally, representing the organization with industry partners and community stakeholders.
Executive Talent & Team Leadership
- Leads, mentors, and develops high-performing teams in Finance and Information Technology.
- Fosters a culture of accountability, innovation, and professional growth while ensuring alignment with the credit union's mission and values.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting from accredited institution. Equivalents in education and experience considered. Master's Degree and/or CPA preferred.
Experience
Ten (10) plus years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally within a credit union, bank, or other regulated financial institution. At least five (5) years in a senior leadership role, such as CFO, Vice President of Finance, or Controller with strategic decision-making responsibilities.
Demonstrated success overseeing asset-liability management, investment strategies, and enterprise risk management.
Skills
Must have the following skills and/or abilities:
- Must have knowledge in the areas of accounting, finance, investments, regulatory reporting, ALM, and strategic planning.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common accounting, investment, and financial reports, along with legal documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries from regulatory agencies and members of the business community.
- Ability to write reports, plans, strategies, forecasts for publication or adoption.
- Ability to effectively present information to the Board of Directors, senior management, staff, and third-party business partners.
- Strong grasp of IT governance, cybersecurity best practices, digital transformation, and core system integration, preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) sufficient to present complex subjects in a clear and concise manner.
