Why This Role Matters

The Senior Claims Review Specialist plays a critical role in protecting the FHA insurance fund by making determinations with direct financial, regulatory, and legal implications. This role is designed for professionals with a deep understanding of FHA claims and who are trusted to make defensible, independent determinations within federal systems.

Role Overview

The Senior Claims Review Specialist conducts post-conveyance FHA insurance claim reviews involving complex documentation, regulatory interpretation, and financial analysis. The specialist independently evaluates claim eligibility, identifies surchargeable and ineligible costs, and documents determinations that must withstand audit and oversight. All work is performed in accordance with HUD policies, handbooks, Mortgagee Letters, and federal performance standards.

Duties

Core Responsibilities

Advanced Claims Review

  • Conduct end-to-end reviews of FHA insurance claims submitted by mortgagees.
  • Evaluate expense categories, advances, timelines, and supporting documentation.
  • FHA policy judgment to complex or high-risk claim scenarios.

Claims Determinations & Financial Impact

  • Identify curable and non-curable deficiencies with regulatory support.
  • Determine surchargeable, unsupported, or ineligible costs.
  • Calculate claim reductions, partial payments, or denials.
  • Support determinations with measurable financial impact.

System-Driven Documentation

  • Enter and maintain determinations within HUD-designated systems, including P260.
  • Produce clear, audit-ready case notes and decision rationales.
  • Ensure traceability between documentation, findings, and outcomes to maintain transparency and accountability.

Quality, Oversight & Mentorship

  • Serve as a benchmark for claim review accuracy and consistency.
  • Support peer guidance, second-level reviews, and complex escalations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of review consistency and outcomes.

Security & Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with federal PII and CUI protection requirements.
  • Follow system access, authentication, and remote-work security protocols.
  • Maintain eligibility through ongoing federal suitability requirements.

System & Access Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain access to HUD systems, including P260.
  • Demonstrated experience working in secure, role-based federal systems.
  • Strong system documentation discipline in high-volume environments.
Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of FHA claims processing, review, or mortgage servicing compliance experience
  • Demonstrated experience in making independent claims determinations
  • Strong knowledge of FHA foreclosure, conveyance, and post-conveyance claims
  • Experience in identifying surchargeable items and claim reductions
  • Ability to pass and maintain a federal background investigation

Benefits

This position is covered under the Service Contract Act (SCA) and compensated in accordance with the applicable U.S. Department of Labor Wage Determination.

Compensation
  • Pay Type: Hourly
  • Pay Rate: SCA-compliant; based on experience and contract requirements
  • Pay Frequency: Bi-monthly
  • Overtime: Paid in accordance with federal and state law when authorized
