AVP - Finance & Reporting

About our Client

Oliver James is happy to partner with a leading multi-line carrier in their search for an AVP of Finance and Reporting. Open due to an internal promotion, this role sits at the intersection of accounting expertise, finance transformation and people leadership.

Successful candidates will be well versed in long duration contract accounting (FAS60, ASC 944) and NAIC Blue Book reporting.

What you'll Do

  • Leadership and development: Inspire and elevate a high-performing finance team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and growth. You'll lead 15-20 professionals (including people leaders) across multiple locations.
  • Financial reporting:
    Own the end-to-end GAAP and statutory reporting lifecycle for life insurance, annuities and supplemental product lines, ensuring accuracy, insight, and compliance at scale.
  • Finance modernization:
    Streamline close cycles, enhance process efficiency, and help advance automation and data analytics within the reporting environment.
  • Business partnering:
    Collaborate closely with senior leadership on initiatives such as new product launches, M&A integrations, and systems transformation.
  • Technical accounting:
    Assess emerging accounting standards, reinsurance contracts, and long-duration products to ensure proper interpretation and application.
  • Controls and compliance:
    Oversee SOX-compliant frameworks and act as the primary liaison with auditors and regulators.

Key Skills

  • Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred; master's a plus).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong foundation in life insurance and long-duration accounting (ASC 944, FAS 60, statutory reporting).
  • Experience with internal controls, SOX, and financial systems implementation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills-able to build trust, lead through change, and partner across functions.
  • A balanced mindset: technically sharp, self-aware, and eager to coach, learn, and improve.
  • Ideally ex-Big 4 with industry experience (but open to exceptional public-accounting candidates ready to make the leap).
