Position Summary:

The Food Service Program Assistant supports daily kitchen operations, helps provide nutritious meals, and assists in culinary-based programs designed for participants with disabilities. This hands-on role blends food service with purpose, ensuring safe, accessible, and engaging dining experiences for all.

You'll collaborate with kitchen staff, program participants, and rehabilitation specialists to foster independence, support life skills, and promote healthy eating habits. Whether you're plating a meal or helping someone learn to chop vegetables, you're making a real impact.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation, portioning, and serving of meals and snacks in accordance with dietary guidelines and participant needs.
  • Support participants in developing culinary and food-handling skills as part of vocational or recreational programs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards in all food service areas, including dishwashing, sanitizing surfaces, and storing food safely.
  • Follow all health codes, nutrition protocols, and internal policies to ensure the safety of participants with allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • Help facilitate cooking classes or food-related activities under supervision, adapting materials to participants' abilities and goals.
  • Participate in meal planning and provide feedback on menu development, incorporating culturally diverse and inclusive options.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of food temperatures, inventories, and participant involvement when needed.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support individualized service plans (ISPs) and vocational training objectives.
  • Provide respectful and person-centered assistance to individuals with varying levels of physical, cognitive, or sensory needs.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in food service, hospitality, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of nutrition and food safety standards
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with individuals with disabilities
Preferred:
  • Experience working in disability services, education, or rehabilitation settings
  • ServSafe Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain within 60 days)
