JOB INFORMATION

Marine Mechanic positions diagnose, maintain, repair, and overhaul inboard and outboard marine gasoline and/or diesel engines, including power heads, carburetors, gear cases, fuel systems, tilt and trim units, hydraulic steering, cooling systems, and lubrication systems; repairs and overhauls small gasoline and/or diesel engines; perform minor fiberglass repairs to vessel hulls; make structural changes and modifications; operate a variety of vessels; operate a two-way mobile radio; make preventative maintenance inspections; perform tune-ups; inspect vessels; maintain records; select and purchase parts and supplies; operate a City vehicle; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Marine Mechanic employees may be required to work an extended period of nights or unusual shifts for which they may receive 5% additional pay.
  • Marine Mechanic employees furnish and maintain their own hand tools (1/2" drive and under), while the City provides power tools. After one year, Marine Mechanic employees may qualify for a yearly tool allowance.
  • The City provides and maintains work clothing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  • Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Marine Mechanic Apprentice Program.
  • Four years of full-time journey-level experience as a Marine Mechanic. Qualifying experience MUST include the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of two- and four-stroke gasoline and/or diesel, inboard and outboard, marine engines including power heads, gear cases, fuel systems, trim and tilt units, engine linkages, ignition systems, and electrical systems.
  • Two years of full-time journey-level equipment mechanic experience which includes the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and/or diesel engines AND two years of full-time journey-level marine mechanic experience as specified above in Option 2.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and apprenticeship training as specified above equaling four years.

NOTE:

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Experience in the inspection of boat trailers.
