Position Overview
Congregation Beth Torah seeks a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant to support the synagogue's financial operations. This position plays a key role in maintaining accurate accounting records, reconciling multiple accounts, and ensuring the smooth financial management of the organization.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, proficient in QuickBooks and Excel, and comfortable working with nonprofit accounting systems such as ShulCloud. This position is primarily remote, with periodic on-site work for check handling, deposits, and coordination with staff.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Responsibilities
- Enter and code vendor invoices, reimbursements, and credit card transactions in QuickBooks.
- Sync and reconcile bank and credit card activity; clear matching transactions.
- Manage member billing and payments through ShulCloud, including dues, donations, and statements.
- Monitor accounts for accuracy and unusual or potentially fraudulent activity.
- Collaborate with synagogue leadership to resolve unmatched transactions or deposits.
Monthly Responsibilities
- Process payroll and contractor payments accurately and on time.
- Submit retirement plan remittances to the Joint Retirement Board.
- Download and reconcile monthly statements for bank, credit card, and brokerage accounts (Inwood, Chase, Schwab).
- Reconcile ShulCloud deposits, stock contributions, and member prepayments to QuickBooks.
- Prepare monthly journal entries and review income statements by class.
- Record payables to Sisterhood and Men's Club, and maintain clear documentation in shared folders.
- Generate and distribute monthly financial reports for leadership review.
Annual Responsibilities
- Assist with membership renewals, adjustments, and write-offs in ShulCloud.
- Prepare and issue tax acknowledgment letters, donor receipts, and the USCJ membership report.
- Support the annual batch renewal process in ShulCloud to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Coordinate year-end reconciliations, pledge tracking, and reporting for the Shield of David campaign.
Periodic and Ad Hoc Responsibilities
- Manage transfers and reimbursements between operating and investment accounts.
- Maintain and update vendor records, including W-9s and 1099 information.
- Configure and maintain ShulCloud accounting settings and reports.
- Support administrative banking functions such as updating signers and account authorizations.
- Respond to member inquiries regarding billing, payments, and donations.
- Assist with special projects, fundraising campaigns, and other financial initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, ideally in a nonprofit or membership-based organization.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with ShulCloud or similar CRM/donor management systems preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong understanding of DAFs and other investment accounts.
Work Environment
- Primarily remote position with in-office presence 2–4 times per month.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds for occasional handling of files or supplies.
- Some schedule flexibility may be required during payroll cycles or major events.

Compensation is commensurate with experience. Benefits may include time off for most federal and Jewish holidays.
