Responsibilities:

· Assist with Therapy Programs: Under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT), a COTA helps implement individualized therapy plans. These include activities to improve fine motor skills, coordination, and sensory processing, aiding students in tasks like writing, dressing, or using tools.

· Conduct Therapy Sessions: COTAs carry out prescribed therapy sessions, working one-on-one or in small groups. They help students with exercises that support physical and cognitive development and monitor their progress.

· Documentation and Reporting: Documenting each student's progress is crucial. COTAs maintain accurate records, track students' responses, and share observations with the OT and educational team to adjust therapy as needed.

· Collaboration and Communication: COTAs work closely with teachers, special education staff, parents, and other professionals to ensure that therapy is effectively integrated into the school environment, providing a consistent approach across settings .

Requirements

· Educational Background: COTAs must complete an accredited associate degree program in Occupational Therapy Assistance, which generally takes about two years.

· Certification: After completing their degree, candidates must pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) COTA exam.

· Licensure: State-specific licensing is often required. This process may include additional exams or background checks and ongoing education to maintain licensure.

· Skills: Effective communication, patience, adaptability, and a compassionate approach are essential for working with diverse student populations. Knowledge of special education and school procedures is beneficial.

· Experience: While some positions may hire entry-level COTAs, prior experience in pediatrics or educational settings can be advantageous
