The Program Specialist, Family & Immigration, assists the family law unit with the development and implementation of the program, conducts intakes for the Family Law Assistance Network (FLAN) and other Pro Bono Center (PBC) clinics, and staffs the quarterly Immigration Clinic and the monthly Advice & Referral Clinic. The Program Specialist must communicate regularly with prospective clients fluently in Spanish and English.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates and supports the Family Law Assistance Network (FLAN), the Immigration Clinic, and other pro bono legal clinics, which includes serving as the primary point of contact for prospective clients, interviewing prospective clients by telephone and/or in-person, screening and tracking cases for referral, supporting attorneys in the pro bono clinics, coordinating all logistics for clinics, retaining interpreters, and confirming client appointments.
  • Completes conflict checks for cases referred to the FLAN.
  • Schedules and completes intakes for the FLAN.
  • Coordinates and communicates with the partner organizations in FLAN.
  • Collects and manages data for FLAN and the Immigration Clinic.
  • Staffs FLAN in-person at DC Superior Court.
  • Assists clients with administrative tasks when requested by the attorney.
  • Assists in recruiting volunteers for FLAN and the Immigration Clinic.
  • Prepares and maintains client case files for FLAN, including closing case files upon completion.
  • Trains non-attorney volunteers and manages clients while providing on-site support at PBC Clinics.
  • Supports FLAN/clinic outreach initiatives, drafts, and distributes messages to D.C. legal service provider listservs, and updates
  • Creates and maintains legal and non-legal referral guides.
  • Assists in building relationships and collaborations with non-legal partners for FLAN and the Immigration Clinic.
  • Develops and drafts pro se materials for family law litigants.
  • Accurately updates the PBC's client, case, and volunteer data, and devises and implements system improvements.
  • Serves as back-up for the Advocacy and Justice Clinic, completes intakes for the Advocacy and Justice Clinic for clients with language access needs (Spanish).
  • Supports language access activities of the PBC.
  • Assists the Managing Attorney and/or Staff Attorney with determining appropriate case placements with volunteer law firms and attorneys.
  • Drafts forms, reports, correspondence, notices, and other documents in both English and Spanish.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant work experience.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends for a variety of Pro Bono Center clinics and events, including clinics/events with the partner organizations in FLAN.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Proficiency with Legal Service and CaseFileXpress.
  • Must be able to interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds, including people of limited means, with patience and compassion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English.
  • Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Pro Bono Center and Bar employees.
  • Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and able to manage several priorities in a day.
  • Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree.

This position is currently a hybrid position, with days worked in the office and days worked remotely.   The hybrid status of this position may change at any time subject to the Pro Bono Center's discretion.
