JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Director of Technology Development will lead the formulation and execution of strategic initiatives to drive commercialization of UTSW intellectual property (IP). Connect innovators from UTSW with funding opportunities, experienced management, and other resources to support commercialization. This executive will serve as the subject matter expert in initiatives to assess, develop and execute branding and market channel strategies designed to optimally position UTSW as the foremost destination for biotech investment in Texas, across the country and globally. Work with cross-functional leadership teams to foster the creation of a North Texas biotech corridor. The Senior Director Technology Development will serve as a key member of the UTSW leadership team in this highly matrixed and influential position. This position will collaborate with a large contingency of key internal and external stakeholders, including faculty members and executives of affiliated and non-affiliated partner organizations, leveraging social, technological, business development, and leadership skills to support the life cycle of innovation, helping inventors bring their inventions beyond ideation into sustainable, de-risked, market-ready products and services. The Senior Director must maintain strong relationships with local and regional community partners, demonstrating an ability to be culturally sensitive in progressive clinical and business development situations.

Experience
8 years of progressively responsible, related experience
Required experience must include promoting university research contracting, licensing early-stage intellectual properties, and supporting an entrepreneurial culture.
Preferred

Experience in life science startups or early stage investing preferred.
JOB DUTIES
Develops and implements strategies to promote UTSW and the region as the foremost destination for biotech and innovation in the world. Collaborates with local, regional, and national leadership to build deep relationships, and raise awareness of UTSW's entrepreneurial faculty and IP; Leverage political experience and relationships to assist UTSW's VP for Government Affairs & Policy as needed.
Translates market insights into business strategies and value propositions to help UTSW leadership assess business-specific opportunities to attract new philanthropy, investment, and other funding resources for UTSW's strategic initiatives.
Work with key stakeholders to develop and establish philanthropy sources and new market channels to attract investment; seek and identify prospective corporate sponsors and provide vision for strategic events in order to maintain ongoing contact with UTSW faculty, entrepreneurs, investors and others in private sector in anticipation of future collaborations involving these entities.
Lead new company formation efforts for university created technologies including but not limited to: aligning strategy with the university's strategic plan and goals, increasing impact of these technologies in the marketplace, directing and managing financial interests for the university related to these new companies, assisting with pitch deck preparation, facilitating A-round investors, facilitating grant funding, mentoring and guiding new founders, and providing seed fund to faculty to support promising discoveries.
Leads funding, de-risking and prototyping activities related to guiding projects from the laboratory to the public, usually through commercialization involving the private sector and determines the best means and timing of such transfer.
Supports the commercialization of technology innovations by collaborating with UTSW leadership and key stakeholders to translate business opportunities into communications and marketing plans/program; ensuring consistency across services, locations and affiliates, identifying and leveraging economies of scale where practical. Facilitate dialogue among/between UTSW and affiliate leadership to identify and prioritize opportunities with corresponding strategies.
Identifies funding source or transfer agent for formations of new companies, when appropriate, to transfer University technology.
Assist in negotiations of licensing agreements as needed, advises on terms and deal structures and maintains close contact with appropriate offices and officials within the University and the UT System Administration to assure all relevant entities are involved in patent/licensing process.
Performs other duties as assigned.
