Sr. Director of Finance – Multi-Station Operations

The Senior Director of Finance is a hybrid position that supports both remote and on-site work based out of Nashville PBS in Nashville, TN. This role is a key member of the senior leadership team responsible for overseeing financial operations, planning, and compliance across Nashville PBS and its partner stations. Reporting to the President and CEO, this role ensures sound fiscal management, transparency, and collaboration in support of Nashville PBS's mission to serve communities with trusted, educational, and inspiring media. The Senior Director provides operational leadership in accounting, budgeting, reporting, and risk management, with a focus on efficiency and alignment across multiple station entities. This position plays a central role in sustaining financial integrity, improving processes, and supporting shared-service operations.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Multi-Station Financial Leadership:
    This position is based out of Nashville PBS, located in Nashville, TN, with financial oversight of multiple stations. Provide financial support, planning and operations across multiple stations, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with organizational goals and local needs. Foster collaboration while respecting each station's local governance and operational autonomy, promoting transparency, accuracy, and adherence to common financial standards and organizational goals. The role could require travel of up to 40% to partner station locations and other relevant business meetings or events.
  • Internal Controls & Audit Readiness:
    Develop and maintain effective internal controls and accounting systems to ensure financial accuracy and transparency, supporting successful annual audits.
  • Financial Reporting & Strategic Analysis:
    Provide clear, timely, and accurate financial reports and analysis to the CEO, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors. Offer insights to support data-driven decisions and organizational planning.
  • Budget Development & Oversight:
    Lead the annual operating and capital budgeting process in coordination with station leaders and department managers. Monitor performance against budgets and support mid-course adjustments as needed.
  • Cash Flow & Forecasting:
    Manage organization-wide cash flow and financial forecasting to support the sustainability of station operations and meet future funding needs.
  • Donor Stewardship & Financial Accountability:
    Partner with Development and Marketing teams to support the effective use and tracking of donated funds, ensuring financial accountability and donor confidence.
  • Investment Management:
    Oversee the implementation of the organization's investment policies related to endowments, reserves, and capital funds, in coordination with external advisors and internal stakeholders.
  • Regulatory & Grant Compliance:
    Ensure timely and accurate completion of tax filings, charitable registrations, CPB reports, and grant-related financial reporting for each station.
  • Financial Systems & Tools:
    Design and support financial reporting tools and procedures that provide station and department leaders with the information needed to manage effectively. Deliver training and guidance as needed.
  • Team Supervision & Development:
    Supervise and support a team of finance professionals, ensuring strong collaboration, accountability, and professional growth across stations.
  • Board & Committee Support:
    Serve as a staff liaison to the Finance Committee and other board groups as assigned, preparing materials and providing insights to support financial governance.
  • Payroll & HR Coordination:
    Collaborate with HR to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing and benefits administration. Maintain confidentiality and compliance in all payroll and personnel-related financial matters.
  • Grants & Fund Management:
    Oversee grant accounting, reporting, and compliance with restricted funding requirements. Track donor-restricted and board-designated funds to ensure proper use and accurate reporting. Partner with development teams to provide financial data for proposals, budgets, and reports.
  • Other Responsibilities:
    Perform additional finance-related duties as assigned by the CEO, especially those supporting cross-station collaboration, systems development, or organizational planning.

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:

The Senior Director of Finance possesses comprehensive knowledge of nonprofit and fund accounting, audit and compliance standards, and financial management across multi-entity organizations. This role requires strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights that inform executive and board decision-making. This role demonstrates exceptional leadership, communication, and team development abilities, guiding staff and partner stations toward shared financial integrity and operational excellence. Success in this position depends on the capacity to balance strategic vision with hands-on management, foster collaboration across departments and stations, ensure transparency and accountability, and uphold the organization's mission of public service through sound fiscal stewardship.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field is required; an advanced degree (MBA or master's in accounting/finance) and/or CPA certification is strongly preferred. This role will have extensive experience—typically eight or more years—in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, ideally within nonprofit, public media, or multi-entity organizations. Demonstrated experience in budgeting, audit preparation, financial analysis, and compliance is essential, along with a proven ability to lead teams and manage cross-organizational financial operations.
