The Sands College of Performing Arts (Sands) is seeking an Assistant Technical Director to work in the theatrical and academic facilities of Sands, supporting production and classroom needs. The Assistant Technical Director assists the Technical Director and production staff. They oversee and coordinate all technical aspects of performance events, including faculty-directed curricular events, student events, mainstage productions, rental activities and summer programming; and ensure all Sands theatrical facilities and equipment are maintained and operational.

The Assistant Technical Director maintains a high level of support for the artistic production and academic goals of Sands and Pace, including mentoring students and providing an educationally sound, safe and satisfying experience for all theater participants.

Position Duties

  • Responsible for assistance in planning, overseeing and coordinating all technical aspects related to Sands Mainstage Productions, curricular activities, student events, and rentals (including but not limited to scenery, lighting, sound, props, projections).
  • Develop and maintain the production schedule with the production management team.
  • Must be comfortable leading calls for construction, load-ins, technical rehearsals and strikes.
  • Produces budgets estimates for performance events, including labor and materials.
  • Research and coordinate required purchasing.
  • Coordinates proper disposal and return of all materials, elements and supplies for Mainstage Productions.
  • Produce necessary construction drawings.
  • Must attend some night and weekend technical rehearsals and work calls.
  • Maintain the Sands theatrical facilities and equipment and ensure they are operational, including accurate equipment lists, inventory, and paperwork for all performance spaces.
  • Assist in the oversight and maintenance of Sands scene shop, prop shop, and prop loan.
  • Respectfully collaborate with production faculty, staff, students and guest artists on the design, build, budget, construction, and installation of all production elements.
  • Organize, coordinate and supervise labor, including students, instructional staff, and union (when applicable).
  • Assess and negotiate the technical expectations of visiting artists as expressed in contracts and technical riders, and may be engaged by internal parties when technical riders are required.
  • Teaches appropriate stagecraft techniques (independently or collaboratively).
  • Work with students on calls to teach appropriate stagecraft techniques.
  • Coordinates with production management, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities and all other offices responsible for safe upkeep of Performing Arts venues and support spaces.
  • Assists production management in supervision of outside rentals and partnerships in Sands in spaces.
  • Facilitate and manage the technical needs of summer programs and rentals.
    Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Work Hours

This is a 12-month position (days and times vary depending on production calendar during the academic year). Work hours must be discussed with Technical Director and Director of Production.

  • BS/BA/BFA, with emphasis in Technical Theatre.
  • At least four years of experience in technical theatre or a related field or equivalent experience. Without the degree, eight years of experience may be considered.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and leadership skills.
  • Prior professional or educational technical theater experience in a scene shop environment.
  • Experience in set and prop construction, lighting, sound, rigging and digital media.
  • Computer drawing and drafting experience with commonly used software packages (Vectorworks or AutoCAD).
  • Familiarity with basic sound, lighting, and costume elements; familiarity with digital media and projections a plus.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Professional attitude toward customer service and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend stage plots, electrical diagrams and light and sound plots.
  • Experience working with and leading student and union stagehands in a university setting.
  • Teaching experience in a liberal arts setting is desirable.
  • Valid Driver's License: ability to drive a cargo van is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., comfortable working at heights (including fly systems, genie lifts, and catwalks ), climb up and down ladders, and to work on their feet for extended periods of time.
