SAIS Academic Affairs invites applicants for the position of SAIS Economics and Math Tutor for the fall 2025 semester. The Economics and Math tutors assist students with better understanding the content of their quantitative courses. The primary focus is on the content covered in the SAIS Essentials of International Economics I & II, International Economics I & II, Statistics, Econometrics, Corporate Finance, and MIEF Core courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Quantitative Methods I, II, III. Tutors are required to offer both virtual and in-person tutoring services in the SAIS Washington, DC campus. Tutoring sessions and work hours are suspended during holidays and semester breaks.

This position provides students with additional academic support in a professional manner. Tutors elicit critical thinking and aid in students' understanding of their writing and academic requirements.

The Tutor assists students in understanding content in designated courses by using various teaching/tutoring strategies and will prepare and lead one-on-one as well as possible group study sessions.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Instruction/Tutoring (95%)

  • Provide students with assistance in the writing process.
  • Use various teaching strategies to provide instruction.
  • Assist students with academic goal setting.
  • Keep records of appointments and student progress.
  • Attend all necessary training courses and workshops.
    Lead training for peer tutors and conduct observations of peer tutors.

Administrative Tasks (5%)

  • Using scheduling software to enter data and accurately record appointment attendance
  • Attending monthly staff meetings.
  • On-time tracking and submission of weekly hours spent performing responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Advanced understanding of basic math, algebra, pre-calculus/calculus.
  • Strong knowledge of content area for specific courses.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Advanced knowledge of the concepts covered in several of the following courses: Essentials of International Economics I & II, International Economics I & II, Statistics, Econometrics, Corporate Finance, and MIEF Core courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Quantitative Methods I, II, III.
  • Applicants must indicate which subject areas they are interested in tutoring ex: Calculus, Pre-calculus, algebra, Essentials of International Economic I/II, International Economic I/II, Statistics, Econometrics, Stata, R, Python, coding language, Excel, economics, finance.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Vaccine Requirements
