The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
We're looking for a Tunnel Engineer to support full-cycle excavation operations on a hard rock Main Beam Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This is a field-based role where you'll be embedded with the mining crew—responsible for monitoring production, interpreting geotechnical data, optimizing TBM performance, and ensuring tunneling stays on-line, on-grade, and on schedule.
Responsibilities:Support daily tunneling operations by tracking machine performance, penetration rates, and wear ratesAnalyze geotechnical conditions and provide guidance on cutterhead tooling, ground support, and excavation strategyAssist with TBM guidance systems, surveying, and tunnel alignment monitoringCoordinate shift handovers and maintain accurate production reports, logs, and as-built recordsIdentify inefficiencies and work with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, EHS) to improve performance and reduce downtimeAssist with ring rebuilds, cutterhead inspections, and machine diagnostics during planned maintenance windowsSupport testing, instrumentation, and quality control efforts for tunnel lining and support systems
Qualifications:Degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field2+ years of experience in tunnel engineering, underground construction, or TBM operations (Main Beam experience preferred)Strong understanding of geomechanics, rock classification, and tunnel support systemsComfortable working underground in rotating shifts and a fast-paced production environmentExperience with tunnel survey systems, TBM guidance, or SCADA data monitoring tools is a plusEIT or PE license a plus, but not required
