Title: Specialist II, Waste and Recycling
Serves as a field-based position that supports DCSD schools by collaborating with school staff, teachers, and students,
as well as DCSD operations staff, DeKalb County Sanitation, and other vendors. Oversees and coordinates districtwide waste and recycling programs, ensuring effective management, education, and implementation of sustainability
initiatives across schools and facilities.
Essential Functions:
- Manages and coordinates waste and recycling activities and programs provided to the District by DeKalb County Sanitation and other vendors, including scheduling pickups and services for both waste and recycling.
- Collaborates with school staff, teachers, and students, as well as DCSD operations and other staff, DC Sanitation, and recycling vendors, to manage school and facility waste and increase diversion from landfills through recycling initiatives.
- Partners with outreach staff at DC Sanitation and local businesses and schools to establish recycling programs and educate the public on sustainable waste management practices.
- Works with DeKalb County Sanitation and DCSD staff to develop and implement programs that reduce waste and promote sustainability.
- Develops and implements recycling and waste volume measurement metrics to track progress and effectiveness.
- Ensures that compactors and dumpsters have appropriate signage and that materials are properly sorted and processed in coordination with DeKalb Sanitation.
- Monitors the effectiveness of waste and recycling programs and adjusts as needed to improve performance.
- Identifies opportunities to enhance waste and recycling efforts by developing education and outreach programs, promoting recycling participation, and coordinating the collection and processing of recyclable materials.
- Conducts continuous inspection and evaluation of waste and recycling operations at each DCSD school and property to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Pursues opportunities for schools to be recognized for waste reduction and recycling achievements through national, state, and local government and nonprofit programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
• Associate or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field preferred.
• In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma or GED and six (6) years of directly related experience will be required.
• Minimum of three (3) years coordinating or supporting recycling, waste management, or sustainability programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
A successful Waste & Recycling Specialist must be knowledgeable about waste management industry standards. Knowledge of regulations is a plus. Must have strong communication and organizational skills and be passionate about promoting environmental sustainability.
The Waste & Recycling Specialist should be a professional who is responsible for ensuring that waste materials are properly disposed of or recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.
