Schedule: This position is scheduled to work Saturday through Wednesday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
DEFINITION To perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of park equipment and facilities; to operate a variety of park maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; basic landscaping maintenance including planting, trimming, watering, mowing, raking, clearing debris; preparation of ball fields, tennis courts and shelters; trash pick-up and graffiti clean-up; inspect parks and facilities for damage, vandalism, broken equipment or hazardous conditions; assist in tree removal; operate a variety of vehicles, gas powered equipment or power tools.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Park Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including basic maintenance and work under the guidance of a Parks Maintenance Worker II or Senior Parks Maintenance Worker.

Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
  1. Perform basic maintenance, repair and landscaping duties in City parks, grounds, and related facilities.
  2. Perform a variety of duties in the planting and maintenance of landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; water, mow, weed, trim, renovate, and fertilize lawns; rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, courts, and other facilities.
  3. Install, repair, and inspect playground equipment, fences and other related parks equipment and facilities.
  4. Operate and maintain landscaping and maintenance equipment including City vehicles, turf mowers, blowers, weed eaters, chippers, sprayers and power tools.
  5. Maintain landscaped areas; apply fertilizers and pesticides as needed.
  6. Maintain athletic fields; clean and maintain tennis courts; clean and prepare shelters in parks.
  7. Inspect parks for damage, vandalism, broken equipment or hazardous conditions and report findings to supervisor.
  8. Pick up trash and remove litter from all City parks and grounds; perform graffiti clean-up.
  9. Perform routine maintenance on all park drinking fountains.
  10. Understand and adhere to safe work practices and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:Basic principles and practices of parks maintenance and repair.
Basic principles and practices of tree removal.
Materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
Basic methods and techniques of landscaping.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:Participate and work effectively in an organization committed to advancing principles and practices of equity and anti-racism.
Perform semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance and repair of parks and related facilities and equipment.
Conduct routine inspections of parks, including equipment and facilities.
Learn to apply herbicide and pesticide.
Maintain landscaped areas.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Learn to operate a variety of parks maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the general public.
Be available to respond to emergencies and natural disasters (including weather events) both during and outside of regular working hours.
Perform heavy physical labor in all weather conditions.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year of park maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping or similar experience.

Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License/Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid first aid/CPR certificate.
Possession of valid state-issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record according to the City's Using City Vehicles administrative policy linked
Possession of valid flagging certification.
Note:
Employment is contingent upon successfully passing state/federal pre-employment background checks and a skills assessment.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
WORK CONDITIONS:

Environmental Conditions:
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease; potentially hazardous chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying; pulling, pushing, reaching; kneeling; repeated bending; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; mid-range to distant visual acuity for inspecting parks and related facilities.
Remote Work Eligibility

Position is not eligible for remote work based on the job responsibility and duties of the position that require job tasks to be done exclusively onsite as outlined in the policy.

All benefit allocations are prorated for part-time regular staff.

Each full-time regular employee receives Tier I allotment per month to buy benefits for themselves and family members, including domestic partners. If the employee does not use the entire allotment, the remaining amount goes into a deferred compensation (457) plan. If the cost is greater than Tier I allotment, the employee moves to Tier II allotment and is able to receive an additional contribution from the City of up to a current year total amount. Mandatory coverage includes Life Insurance, Long Term Disability, PERS (State retirement) and 401a social security replacement plan. The City does not contribute to Social Security but to 401(a) retirement plan.

Optional coverage includes Regence, Kaiser, Delta Dental, Willamette Dental, Vision, Flexible Spending Accounts for medical and/or childcare costs, Employee Assistance Program, Voluntary Life & ADD Insurance, Voluntary Accident Insurance and Voluntary Critical Illness Insurance.

The City of Shoreline is qualifying employer. Our employee may qualify for federal student loan balance forgiveness after 10 years of public service employment while making qualifying payments.

The City also provides free ORCA passes. Eleven holidays are observed along with two personal days are provided each year. Additional three management days are included for exempt employees. Vacation starts at 11 days per year. Sick leave is accrued at 8 hours for remote work eligible positions. Positions not eligible for remote work accrue 10 hours of sick leave per month.
