Department Description:
The Manager, Government Grants is part of the Development and Membership branch, a team of 18 staff members leading organization-wide fundraising efforts. This includes a robust range of programs - membership, major gifts, events, legacy gifts, grants, campaigns, One Tam, and other special fundraising initiatives. The Development team is critical to identifying, engaging, stewarding, and leveraging philanthropic, public, and individual support to advance the Parks Conservancy's mission in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships, the Manager, Government Grants plays an important role in managing government funding at the local, regional, state, and federal levels. The Grants Manager works closely with program and project staff and coordinates with partner agencies, including the National Park Service and Presidio Trust.
This position contributes to developing strategies and building relationships that expand the Parks Conservancy's government grant portfolio. The Manager, Government Grants helps manage existing grants and contributes to new opportunities to strengthen the organization's current and future public funding resources. The Manager, Government Grants also collaborates with the Director of Institutional Grants and the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships to coordinate institutional giving efforts across government, corporate, and foundation sources.
A particular focus of this role is supporting One Tam, a collaborative organized by the Conservancy with four land management agencies (National Park Service, California State Parks, Marin County Parks, and Marin Municipal Water District). The Grants Manager helps identify and coordinate government grant opportunities that advance One Tam's shared goals, strategies, and programs.
This position is based at the Parks Conservancy's headquarters at Fort Mason in San Francisco. In-person work two-three days per week is expected, with additional offsite meetings as needed.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Grant Coordination and Management
- Research and track state and federal grant opportunities.
- Collaborate with project staff, and coordinate with partner agencies and organizations to package compelling grant proposals.
- Coordinate and support implementation of a government/public funding portfolio for Parks Conservancy programs and projects.
- Contribute to grant proposals and reports, ensuring timely submission of all requirements. Coordinate with project staff, internal stakeholders and subject matter experts on content requirements and creation, ensuring grant development timelines are met.
- Maintain a calendar of deadlines for applications, reports, and stewardship for the institutional giving team including foundations, corporations, and government grants.
- Manage a portfolio of government grant prospects, identifying new opportunities from emerging funding sources.
- Under direction of Director of Philanthropic Partnership and Director of Institutional Giving, draft proposals for a portfolio of recurring grants.
- Support capacity building among program staff to participate in government grant work.
- Partner with the Director of Institutional Giving to ensure alignment across government, corporate, and foundation grant strategies.
- Coordinate with Communications staff on funder acknowledgments.
One Tam
- Support the relevant Steering Committee members on development of a sustainability strategy for One Tam, including tracking activities and fundraising opportunities.
- Participate in partner meetings to provide input and guidance on government funding opportunities and implementation
- Identify and help advance grant opportunities for priority One Tam projects and programs.
- Support collaboration with partner agencies to secure and leverage agency contributions.
Data and Budget Management
- Work with the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships and Director of Institutional Giving to refine systems and processes for managing grant activity, including applications, reporting, meeting scheduling, and stewardship.
- Track and analyze data related to funding usage and progress toward revenue goals.
- Maintain accurate grant records and reporting in Raiser's Edge NXT and internal files
- Prepare draft budgets for government grant applications in collaboration with Finance staff.
- Ensure compliance with grant requirements, including cost share analysis and indirect cost allocation.
- Demonstrated experience with databases and online portals, preferably with government grant databases and portals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 5+ years in a non-profit organizations, development role preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supporting or managing government grant applications in a nonprofit setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong skills in building and maintaining partnerships, internally and externally.
- Familiarity with government and public funding processes, research, and proposal development and reporting.
- Understanding of environmental, cultural, and community issues relevant to Bay Area parks and programming.
- Ability to serve as an effective liaison with government and nonprofit partners, representing the Parks Conservancy and One Tam with professionalism and sensitivity.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
- Collaborative approach with the ability to contribute to a positive, team-oriented environment.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
- Comfort using fundraising databases and online grant portals.
Desired Skills: Experience using fundraising databases such as Raiser's Edge NXT and/or cloud-based storage systems and comfort working in grant portals such as Login.gov (formerly Grants.gov) and others such as e-Civis, Easygrants, Submittable, and more)
