If so, we might have just the opportunity you're looking forIdaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Irradiated Fuels and Materials group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a NSUF Chief Scientist focusing on NSUF neutron irradiations of structural materials, nuclear fuels, and instrumentation for nuclear energy applications.Our team works a hybrid 9x80 schedule onsite at our Research Education Campus with every other FridayResponsibilities Include:Chief Scientists of the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) play leadership roles in the operation of the NSUF and are primary points of contact for the technical aspects of the NSUF projects. They are expected to maintain an understanding of the scientific/technical objectives and progress of all ongoing NSUF supported research projects.Chief Scientists aid the NSUF Director and provide leadership in the identification, evaluation, development, and execution of NSUF projects in collaboration with university, industry, national laboratory, small business, and international users. They will provide input for strategic planning within the NSUF and mentorship and guidance for young researchers.The NSUF Irradiation Chief Scientist is expect to maintain a nationally or internationally recognized reputation in the irradiation testing of structural materials, nuclear fuels, and instrumentation for nuclear energy applications. Experience and expertise are required in neutron, ion, and gamma irradiation. Some of this can be developed on-the-job, but a good foundation is required at the start. Qualifications Minimum Requirements: PhD in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution. Level 4 - PhD in science or engineering area related to the mission of the NSUF and 4 years of relevant experience, Level 5 - PhD in science or engineering area related to the mission of the NSUF and 6 years of relevant experience. Nationally recognized expertise in nuclear fuels and/or nuclear materials research. Nationally recognized expertise in irradiation testing of nuclear fuels, nuclear materials, and/or reactor instrumentation research. This should include experience with materials testing research and test reactors. Experience with ion and gamma irradiation is a benefit. Demonstrated experience in developing and leading research projects/programs, research partnerships, and strategic planning. A minimum of three letters, including one external, from recognized experts in the candidate’s field are expected to establish the candidate’s reputation. Must be a U.S. citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level (Top Secret equivalent) security clearance as well as Sensitive Compartmented Information access. Experience with interfacing with the Department of Energy and other US Government agencies, universities, industry, and other external entities.Job Information: The pay range for this position is:EX4: Grade 460 $111,888 to $229,284 EX5: Grade 470 $134,124 to $275,136 . At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills. Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard and type, reach with hands and arms, and operate job-related equipment.
