1. Education and Training

  • High School Diploma or GED: This is the basic educational requirement. A background in science or mathematics can be beneficial.

2. Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Solar System Installation: A deep understanding of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including how to install, connect, and troubleshoot solar panels, inverters, batteries, and other components.
  • Electrical Knowledge: Basic knowledge of electrical systems and wiring, as well as understanding electrical codes (such as NEC - National Electrical Code).
  • Roofing and Structural Knowledge: Familiarity with roofing materials and structures to properly install solar panels on rooftops.
  • Hand and Power Tools Proficiency: Experience using tools like drills, saws, and other installation equipment.
  • Must have experience with Enphase and Tesla Battery products, job will include battery backup and grid tie battery installations. 

3. Certifications ( Preferred, but not required.) 

  • NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners): Certification in solar PV installation (such as the NABCEP Solar PV Installation Professional certification) is highly valued and often required by employers. 
  • OSHA Certification: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training in construction safety is often required, especially for working at heights or with electricity.
  • First Aid/CPR: Many employers prefer candidates who have basic first aid and CPR certifications for safety reasons.

4. Work Experience

  • Prior Solar Installation Experience: Typically, 1-2 years of experience in solar PV installation or related fields is required. Experience in electrical work, construction, or roofing can also be applicable.
  • Supervisory or Leadership Experience: Since this is a lead installer position, some prior leadership experience or the ability to supervise a team is beneficial.
  • Project Management Skills: Experience in coordinating installation projects, managing schedules, and ensuring quality control.

5. Physical Requirements

  • Physical Stamina and Strength: The role involves lifting heavy materials, working at heights, and being on your feet for long hours.
  • Comfortable Working Outdoors: Lead installers often work in various weather conditions, including direct sunlight, rain, or snow.

6. Soft Skills

  • Leadership: Ability to lead a team, delegate tasks, and ensure smooth project execution.
  • Communication: Clear communication skills for interacting with clients, team members, and management.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve issues during the installation process.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in measurements, installation, and following safety protocols.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage installation timelines effectively and meet project deadlines.

7. Other Considerations

  • Clean Driving Record: Often required for driving a company vehicle to installation sites.
  • Willingness to Travel: Some positions may require travel to various job sites.
  • Commitment to Safety: A strong focus on safety procedures to protect oneself, the team, and the client.
