Phlebotomist

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
  • Updating patient information, collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explaining in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to the required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.
