Job tasks:

1. Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Management
Developing IEPs: Collaborate with other educators, parents, and specialists to create individualized education plans for students, setting specific goals based on their unique needs.
IEP Meetings: Organize and participate in IEP meetings with parents, administrators, and other professionals to review progress and adjust goals.
Progress Monitoring: Track students academic and behavioral progress and document it in line with their IEP goals.
2. Instruction and Curriculum Adaptation
Modify Curriculum: Adapt general education lessons and materials to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Differentiate Instruction: Use a variety of teaching strategies to cater to diverse learning styles and abilities, such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and multi-sensory approaches.
Small Group/One-on-One Instruction: Provide targeted, specialized instruction to students in smaller groups or individual settings.
3. Behavioral Support
Behavioral Plans: Develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with behavioral challenges.
Classroom Management: Use positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and structured routines to maintain a supportive and structured classroom environment.
4. Collaboration with General Education Teachers
Co-Teaching: Partner with general education teachers to provide inclusive instruction for students with disabilities in a mainstream classroom.
Consultation: Offer guidance to general education teachers on how to accommodate and modify their instruction to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
5. Assessment and Data Collection
Formal and Informal Assessments: Administer assessments to evaluate academic skills, learning styles, and behavioral needs.
Progress Reports: Collect and report data on student performance, making decisions based on evidence to adjust instruction and interventions.
6. Social and Emotional Support
Social Skills Training: Teach students strategies to improve social interactions, self-regulation, and problem-solving skills.
Emotional Support: Provide emotional support for students who may face social or emotional difficulties, helping them develop self-confidence and resilience.
7. Family and Parent Communication
Regular Updates: Communicate regularly with parents about their childs progress, behavior, and any concerns.
Parental Support: Work with families to provide strategies and support that can be used at home to promote consistency in learning and behavior.
8. Professional Development and Collaboration
Ongoing Training: Attend professional development opportunities to stay informed about the latest teaching strategies, tools, and policies in special education.
Collaboration with Specialists: Work closely with speech therapists, occupational therapists, counselors, and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
9. Technology Integration
Assistive Technology: Implement assistive technology tools like speech-to-text software, audiobooks, or specialized devices to support student learning and accessibility.
Learning Platforms: Utilize digital learning platforms to enhance engagement and provide alternative ways for students to access curriculum materials.
In addition to these responsibilities, special education teachers often need to be flexible, patient, and skilled in adapting to the constantly changing needs of their students.
