Position Overview:

The Maintenance Assistant Manager in a PVC manufacturing facility is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the maintenance team, ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of manufacturing equipment and machinery. This role will involve supervising the maintenance team, coordinating maintenance schedules, troubleshooting equipment issues, and ensuring a safe and productive work environment. The Assistant Manager will also provide support to the Maintenance Manager, ensuring the timely and effective completion of maintenance tasks and responding to emergency breakdowns as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Team Leadership and Supervision:
  • Supervise, train, and support the maintenance team (mechanical, electrical, and other specialized technicians) to ensure high standards of performance and safety.
  • Develop and maintain work schedules for the maintenance team to ensure adequate coverage for all shifts and ensure downtime is minimized.
  • Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing feedback, coaching, and development opportunities to maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are documented properly and that the team follows best practices for maintenance procedures.
  1. Machine and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Oversee routine preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting for production machinery, such as extruders, calenders, conveyors, cooling systems, and other equipment in the PVC manufacturing process.
  • Ensure that all machinery operates efficiently, reducing downtime and improving overall plant performance.
  • Coordinate and lead troubleshooting efforts for major equipment failures, both during scheduled maintenance and in response to unplanned breakdowns.
  1. Scheduling and Planning:
  • Coordinate and prioritize maintenance tasks to ensure that production goals are met while keeping machines in optimal working condition.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules, ensuring routine checks, inspections, and repairs are performed regularly to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Work closely with production management to schedule maintenance activities that minimize disruption to manufacturing processes.
  1. Inventory and Spare Parts Management:
  • Oversee the management of maintenance inventory, including tools, parts, and consumables, ensuring that essential parts and supplies are always available for repairs.
  • Collaborate with the tool crib or inventory department to ensure that stock levels are maintained and reorder items when necessary.
  • Ensure proper storage and organization of parts and materials to streamline maintenance processes.
  1. Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with OSHA, company, and industry-specific safety standards.
  • Promote a safety-conscious work environment by regularly conducting safety audits, inspections, and providing safety training to the maintenance team.
  • Ensure the team adheres to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety protocols to prevent accidents during maintenance operations.
  1. Performance Monitoring and Continuous Improvement:
  • Monitor machine performance through performance metrics (e.g., mean time between failures, equipment downtime) and suggest improvements to processes or equipment to increase reliability and efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, energy savings, or cost reductions in the maintenance operation and communicate recommendations to the Maintenance Manager.
  1. Emergency Response and After-Hours Support:
  • Serve as the first point of contact for emergency breakdowns during non-working hours, taking calls as needed to provide immediate guidance and support.
  • Coordinate and manage emergency repair efforts, ensuring minimal production downtime and timely resolution of equipment issues.
  • Participate in on-call rotation with the Maintenance Manager or other key personnel, responding to urgent maintenance issues after hours or during weekends.
  1. Reporting and Documentation:
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date maintenance logs are maintained for all repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, and machine conditions.
  • Generate and analyze reports related to equipment performance, maintenance costs, and downtime to present to upper management.
  • Assist in preparing and tracking the maintenance department budget, ensuring cost-effective management of resources.
  1. Collaboration with Other Departments:
  • Work closely with the production, engineering, and quality control teams to ensure maintenance aligns with production schedules and quality standards.
  • Provide input during equipment upgrades, installations, and process improvements by offering expertise on maintenance requirements and potential risks.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Education & Experience:
    • Industrial Maintenance, or a related field, or equivalent experience in a maintenance management role within manufacturing.
    • 3+ years of experience in a maintenance role, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity in a manufacturing environment, preferably in PVC or plastic extrusion.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Strong knowledge of PVC manufacturing equipment and processes, including extrusion, calendaring, and related machinery.
    • Extensive hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical systems, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance practices.
    • Experience with automated control systems, PLCs, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical distribution systems is highly desirable.
  • Leadership & Communication Skills:
    • Proven ability to lead, train, and motivate a diverse team of technicians.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate clearly with team members, other departments, and upper management.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage competing deadlines.
  • Problem-Solving Skills:
    • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving mechanical, electrical, and system issues under time constraints.
    • Ability to make quick, informed decisions, especially in emergency situations or during equipment failures.
  • Safety and Regulatory Knowledge:
    • Solid understanding of workplace safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.) and maintenance safety standards.
    • Ability to ensure team compliance with safety procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and other safety protocols during maintenance work.
  • Software & Tools:
    • Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for managing work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, and inventory.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting, data analysis, and communication.
Tools and Equipment Managed:
  • Extruders, calenders, and other plastic molding/extrusion equipment
  • Compressors, pumps, conveyors, and cooling systems
  • Hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems
  • Testing and diagnostic tools for electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety tools
Work Environment:
  • Location: PVC manufacturing plant, requiring regular presence on the production floor.
  • Shift: Monday to Friday with occasional overtime, including being on-call for after-hours support in case of urgent breakdowns or equipment failures.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, and potential hazards. Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods.
Additional Skills (Desirable):
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance).
  • Experience in managing or contributing to energy-saving initiatives or sustainability projects in a manufacturing environment.

This role is vital for ensuring the efficient operation of the manufacturing process by managing the maintenance team, preventing downtime, and addressing equipment issues proactively. The Maintenance Assistant Manager will be a key player in maintaining high production standards while adhering to safety and operational guidelines.
