Job Description: Special Education TeacherQualifications:
Education:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education from an accredited institution.
Licensure and Certification:
- Valid New Jersey Special Education Teacher Certification for the appropriate grade level (e.g., Elementary, Middle, High School).
- Must hold a Standard Certificate or Provisional Certificate in Special Education, issued by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE).
- Certificate in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD) required for most special education roles.
- NJ Criminal Background Check and FBI fingerprinting clearance required.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Experience:
- Previous experience working with students with disabilities in a school setting is preferred.
- Experience with IEP development and progress monitoring is a plus.
Position Overview:

Youll team up with other teachers, school staff, and families to create a positive, inclusive classroom where every student can thrive.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of students, ensuring IEP goals are appropriately set and tracked.
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction: Adapt lessons to meet students' specific learning needs, ensuring accessibility and engagement.
- Monitor and assess student progress: Regularly track students academic and behavioral progress, making adjustments to teaching strategies and goals as needed.
- Collaborate with school staff: Work closely with general education teachers, school administrators, counselors, and related service providers to create a holistic educational experience.
- Participate in IEP meetings: Actively engage in IEP development and review meetings with families, providing input on student progress and next steps.
- Create an inclusive learning environment: Foster a safe, supportive, and welcoming classroom culture where all students feel valued and can achieve their potential.
- Implement positive behavioral interventions: Use strategies to support positive behavior and address challenges in the classroom.
- Maintain accurate records: Keep up-to-date documentation on IEPs, student progress, and other important information required by the school and state.
- Communicate with families: Regularly update parents and guardians on student progress, addressing concerns and providing support as needed.
- Knowledge of special education laws and best practices: Familiarity with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and New Jersey state regulations.
- Strong communication skills: Ability to effectively collaborate with students, families, and other school staff.
- Classroom management skills: Experience in creating a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
- Differentiated instruction: Ability to modify lessons and adapt materials to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Organizational skills: Strong ability to manage multiple IEPs, progress reports, and other documentation.
- Patience and empathy: A compassionate, patient approach to teaching students with varying needs.
