Job Overview:

This role offers an exceptional opportunity to lead the conservation efforts of a dynamic and esteemed institution, Brookfield Zoo Chicago. As the Animal Conservation Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily husbandry and welfare of a diverse animal collection, ensuring their health, well-being, and conservation.

As a key member of the Animal Care and Programs management team, you will contribute to the development and implementation of programs, guidelines, and procedures that support the zoo's mission. Your expertise in captive management and conservation will drive the success of these initiatives.

You will also oversee the management of assigned facilities, develop and manage departmental budgets, and supervise a team of skilled animal care specialists. This is a unique chance to shape the future of conservation at Brookfield Zoo Chicago.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain the highest quality of animal care and welfare, ensuring the health and well-being of assigned animals.
  2. Supervise and develop a team of animal care specialists, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  3. Develop and manage departmental budgets, optimizing resources for maximum impact.
  4. Manage assigned facilities, ensuring they meet the needs of the animal collection and staff.
  5. Lead the development and management of conservation programs related to carnivores and small mammals, driving innovation and best practices.
  6. Participate in the development and implementation of ACP programs, guidelines, and procedures, supporting the zoo's overall mission.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of captive management experience in a zoo or large-scale animal care facility, with expertise in taxon specialty.
  • Minimum 3 years of managerial experience, including budget development and management, high-level animal collection management, and staff recruitment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly word processing and database management.
  • Cultural competency, with experience working effectively with diverse audiences.

Estimated Salary:

$120,000 - $150,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
