Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Custodian I to join our team at the City of Burlington, VT. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of our public buildings and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform general and recurring indoor and outdoor custodial work, including sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors.
  • Operate mechanical and manual equipment to strip, wash, wax, and buff floors.
  • Wash windows, walls, fixtures, doors, and woodwork, and polish furniture, mirrors, and chrome hardware.
  • Empty and clean trash containers, and prepare trash, recycling, and compost for removal.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen and bathroom sinks and toilets, and clean and unplug drains.
  • Sweep, clean, and remove trash from outdoor walkways, driveways, and facility grounds.
  • Remove snow and ice from walkways using manual and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance, building security, and event set-up/take-down duties for the Fire House Gallery, City Hall, and other municipal buildings.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of previous experience in the custodial or janitorial field working without close supervision.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and communicate clearly with employees and the public.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions, and operate hand tools, power tools, and various equipment.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules, and personnel policies.
