Job Description

Are you passionate about providing an inclusive environment for school-age youth?

The Southeast Ventura County YMCA is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Afterschool Teacher/Tutor.

This role involves planning, organizing, and implementing age-appropriate program activities that promote the physical, emotional, and social development of children.

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and leading activities that foster a sense of community and belonging among youth.
  • Nurturing children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families.
  • Supervising children, classrooms, or sites, and all activities, including ADA accommodations where appropriate.
  • Making ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Cultivating positive relationships and maintaining effective communication with parents, engaging them as volunteers and connecting them to the YMCA.
  • Using positive reinforcement techniques to address children's behavioral concerns.
  • Attending scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and completing all assigned online trainings.
  • Attending and participating in family nights, as well as program activities.

Qualifications:

  • Meets educational and experience qualifications established by state law - completion with passing grades of at least six (6) postsecondary semester units of specified early childhood education classes or have a valid Child Development Assistant permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Knowledge of acceptable child care and day camp practices.
  • Demonstrates initiative to plan, lead, and participate in activities.
  • All required online trainings must be completed before starting work, which will be compensated for accordingly.
  • Familiarity with mandated reporting and steps that need to be taken.
  • Certifications (must be maintained and current at all times):
  • CPR & First Aid certifications through American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Preventative Health through an EMSA recognized organization.
  • Must have Health Screening and TB clearance (completed during the hiring process).
  • Must have up-to-date TDAP and MMR vaccinations.
  • Criminal records clearance (completed during the hiring process).
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • This position may require the ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time, wade in water in order to supervise children, able to walk continuously at least 1/2 mile, spend a full workday outdoors in any weather condition.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
