About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Accountant and Payroll Specialist to join our team at New York Law School. This is a dynamic opportunity for an individual to make a significant impact in accounting, payroll processing, and customer service.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and technical skills, with a proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for preparing and transmitting payrolls through our contracted system, as well as providing support for other accounting functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Payroll Functions:
  • Prepare and transmit payroll through the school's contracted system.
  • Update payroll with tax changes, personnel information, and voluntary deductions.
  • Monitor and calculate timecards and timesheets.
  • Work with the Office of Human Resources to ensure accurate employee compensation.
  • Prepare and reconcile payroll labor allocations.
  • Reconcile general ledger payroll transactions against forms 941 and W-3.
  • Maintain and file payroll records and documents.
  • Prepare and distribute W-2s.
  • Collaborate with our payroll vendor on issues and tax matters.
  • Coordinate pay dates and validate payrolls and additional compensations.
  • Distribute paychecks and research questions from internal and external sources.

Additional Accounting Functions:

  • Support in preparing invoices for payment.
  • Enter invoices and check requisitions into Banner.
  • Proof and verify accuracy, account coding, and running processes.
  • Assist outside auditors with schedules and year-end requests.
  • Support preparation, review, and filing of 1099s.
  • Maintain and file accounts payable documents.
  • Contribute to day-to-day operations in the Accounting Department.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to broader institutional initiatives and assume responsibilities as directed by the Associate Controller and Vice President for Financial Planning & Analysis.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • Minimum 2-5 years' experience in accounts payable and payroll processing.
  • ADP or similar payroll systems.
  • Strong understanding of payroll structures and federal/state compliance.
  • Proven commitment to customer service and ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Experience using Banner preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of accounting functions and technical skills preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

We offer an annual salary range of $65,000 to $75,000, along with a competitive benefits package.
