Job Summary:

The Paramedic in the Emergency Department at UNC Health Care provides high-quality patient care to patients of all ages, from infants to geriatrics. This role requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care to patients of all ages, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Works collaboratively with the Registered Nurse, ED Provider, LPN, and ED Tech to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Performs procedures and tasks as outlined and approved for paramedics by the North Carolina Office of EMS and the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes based on acuity of the patient.
  • Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and supports and promotes Carolina Care.
  • Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information.
  • Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed throughout the facility.
  • Initiates IV per order, administers fluids and medication.
  • Performs basic data collection, prepares patient for exam, and communicates findings to primary and/or charge nurse.
  • Documents medication administration, ongoing assessments, interventions, patient rounding in the EMR in accordance with hospital policies and requirements.

Requirements:

  • Completion of OEMS approved training & competency program for Paramedic.
  • 1 Year experience in a pre-hospital environment as a Paramedic required.
  • Current certification as Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) with the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medicine.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 6 months of hire date.

Work Environment:

The Paramedic will work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring the use of protective equipment; exposure to other infectious diseases. Exposure to environmental extremes.

Physical Requirements:

The Paramedic must be able to push stretcher and other patient carrying devices with patient.
