Job Description

Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office, supervising the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparing engineering designs, drawings, and specifications
  • Preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials, and equipment
  • Providing engineering support to operations staff
  • Reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies of processes
  • Analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards
  • Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations
  • Assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants
  • Determining resources necessary to complete assigned work
  • Reviewing plans, permit applications, and specifications developed by staff, consultants, and contractors
  • Verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects
  • Preparing and supervising the preparation of technical engineering reports and other documentation
  • Interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating, and counseling staff
  • Preparing bid documents and reviewing and analyzing bids
  • Conducting meetings and making presentations
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Three years of verifiable professional engineering experience, including two years of experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Civil Engineer or higher
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Traffic, or Transportation Engineering
Substitutions

Candidates may be eligible for substitution of experience or education as follows:

  • Candidates licensed in other states who meet the minimum requirements may be eligible for a waiver
  • A Master's degree in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for one year of work experience
  • A Ph.D. in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for two years of work experience
Working Conditions

Some positions may require specific lifting, climbing, working in high places, and exposure to various weather conditions.
