Occupational Therapist

The Milliken Hand Rehabilitation Center at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a full-time occupational therapist with a strong background in hand therapy and custom orthotic fabrication. Our team of occupational, physical, and certified hand therapists works closely with orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons to provide exceptional, direct 1:1 care for patients with a wide variety of hand and upper extremity conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver evidence-based occupational therapy evaluation and treatment services in a Hand/Upper Extremity therapy clinic, including follow-up services to ensure appropriate outcomes.
- Complete all aspects of clinical documentation, including billing and assigned documentation, and record evaluations, goals, treatment plans, client responses, and progressive changes in the client's record according to established protocols.
- Collaborate with physicians, other healthcare practitioners, families, and caregivers to obtain additional information, suggest revisions in treatment programs, and coordinate occupational therapy intervention with other care providers.
- Orient, instruct, and direct occupational therapy assistants and students in patient-related activities as assigned.
- Participate in program development and implementation activities as assigned.
- Participate in performance and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
Working Conditions
Demonstrate current knowledge and application of safety issues, particularly as applied to body mechanics, and ability to lift 10 pounds from floor to waist and carry 10 pounds for short distances, push and pull occasionally with moderate force, and coordinate hand movements to write, type, manipulate folders, and client body parts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree with 2-3 years of Hand/Upper Extremity clinical experience.
- Certification as a Hand Therapist (CHT).
- Advanced skills in custom orthosis fabrication and experience treating traumatic and complex upper extremity conditions.
- Ability to apply principles of scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions, and interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interview, counsel, or advise clients/patients and their families, and perform high-level problem-solving, negotiation, and executive functions.
- Able to organize, prioritize, and effectively manage a caseload of varied patients and use judgment regarding discharge planning and timing of services.
- Computer skills, including word processing and basic database manipulation.
- Comfortable with an evidence-based practice work environment dedicated to continual improvement and effective change.
- Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited program with five years of clinical experience in an identified practice area.
- Current licensure to practice as an occupational therapist in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location.
- Basic Life Support Certification or obtains certification within one month of employment.
