Job Overview:

The Strategic Communications Specialist for Crisis Management plays a critical role in supporting the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Issues Management by identifying, analyzing, and addressing potential challenges or crises that may impact the institution. This position serves as an expert in developing and deploying effective communication strategies and risk mitigation measures to support ongoing priorities related to sensitive matters affecting the University.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with the AVC to establish, implement, and evaluate strategies and tactics related to issues management, with a focus on research, writing, and content creation.
  2. Receive assignments and prioritize work based on direct communication from the AVC.
  3. Assume duties on behalf of the AVC in their absence or as requested to represent the University.
  4. Manage operations for the campus Incident Response Team and horizon-scanning processes.
  5. Develop communications, including internal campus-wide messages, media statements, social media content, reports, talking points, fact sheets, and FAQs, ensuring alignment with specific strategies tailored to audiences and the overall University.
  6. Monitor, document, and report on data in key areas.
  7. Gather relevant background information, including University history, policies, data, and communications, creating and maintaining a resource library of content related to current and past issues.
  8. Track news coverage, social media, and other sources of intelligence to understand the context for issues and forecast emerging topics important for the University to be prepared for.
  9. Consult with communication partners across the campus community to identify emerging and ongoing projects.
  10. Share resources with the campus community and ensure consistency of messaging and a unified response.
  11. Ensure key initiatives meet defined objectives and expectations using project management skills, documenting and following through on project timelines and scope.
  12. Stay up-to-date on the latest and emerging news and information relevant to the campus community, informing messaging and strategy for key initiatives.
  13. Edit inbound materials to be sent on behalf of the AVC and Issues Management unit, ensuring clear, concise communications with proper tone, checking facts, and adhering to the University's brand strategy for internal and external communications.
  14. Collaborate closely with the News and Media Relations team to help identify projects, develop strategy, plan social media postings, and deliver and measure communications.
  15. Work closely with senior leadership and the Incident Response Team in the absence of the AVC or as directed.

Requirements:

This position requires:

  • A Bachelor's Degree.
  • Seven years of relevant experience.
  • Strong written and editing skills.
  • Experience writing on behalf of senior-level leadership.
  • Ability to think quickly and work under pressure, with strong time-management abilities.
  • Effective working independently and managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong skills in building relationships/coalitions and working in a diverse, collaborative environment.
  • Social media-related reputation management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
