Job Summary

The Senior Acquisitions Editor for Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology role is a highly sought-after position at Harvard University Press. This esteemed publisher seeks an experienced editor to spearhead the acquisition of 15-20 new books annually in psychology, sociology, anthropology, and adjacent fields.

About the Role

This Senior Editor will be responsible for maintaining a strong list of publications that cater to both scholars and the general readership. To achieve this, the ideal candidate must stay abreast of the latest research and publications in the field by attending professional conferences and traveling to universities across the United States.

The successful applicant will also maintain a network of prospective authors, agents, and other publishing professionals worldwide, actively commissioning works of broad appeal and significance. They will selectively solicit and evaluate proposals for books that can reach a wide readership as well as books for scholars and professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate contracts on behalf of the Press
  • Supervise the peer review process
  • Collaborate closely with authors to ensure the quality of manuscripts and fulfillment of contractual obligations

Requirements

The ideal candidate should possess an undergraduate degree, preferably with an advanced degree in a related field. Additionally, they should have at least 8 years of publishing experience, including 8 years of book-acquisition experience. Other relevant qualifications such as advance academic degrees, publications, or institutional appointments will be considered.

Compensation and Benefits

HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS OFFERS A COMPETITIVE SALARY OF $120,000 - $150,000 PER YEAR, WITH BENEFITS INCLUDING:

  • 3-4 weeks of accrued vacation time per year
  • 12 accrued sick days per year
  • 12.5 holidays plus a Winter Recess in December/January
  • 3 personal days per year (prorated based on date of hire)
  • Up to 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents who are primary caregivers
